Accordion maestro Nico Carstens dies

Cape Town – South African music legend Nico Carstens died on Tuesday.

According to a statement by his family, the accordionist and songwriter was admitted to the Netcare N1 hospital in Cape Town on Tuesday morning. He died at the age of 90 surrounded by his four children.

Nico, whose most famous song Zambezi became a world hit, received his first accordion at the age of 13. Just six months later he won an adult music competition and produced his first music piece at the age of 17.

Nico has composed more than 2000 songs and recorded over 90 albums during his career.

A memorial service will be held for Nico of which the details will be announced soon.
