Johannesburg - Afro-pop singer Vusi Nova has promised South Africans making their way to the ninth annual Buyel’Ekhaya Pan-African Music Festival a concert to remember.
The event takes place at Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium in East London today from 10:00.
Nova is part of an impressive line-up, which includes big names in the music industry such as Ringo Madlingozi, Zahara, Amanda Black, Berita, Ntando, Black Coffee, Lady Zamar, DJ Tira, VJ Nutty, Distruction Boyz and internationally renowned icon Oliver Mtukudzi.
Nova said: “The Buyel’Ekhaya festival is special as it is the biggest music event in my home province, the Eastern Cape.”
In a telephonic interview with City Press from his home in Zimbabwe, Mtukudzi expressed his excitement about playing at the upcoming concert and said whenever he played at this event, he felt at home.
“People should bring their dancing shoes and come and enjoy the show,” said Mtukudzi.
“I will try to play all the songs I know they love and hope that they are going to dance the night away. It is going to be a show to remember,” he said.
The Buyel’Ekhaya festival is not only about music. It will also incorporate the second instalment of the Buyel’Ekhaya Fashion Development Programme, in which aspiring young Eastern Cape fashion designers and students participate in an intensive skills development and mentorship programme with top designers Thula Sindi and David Tlale.
The programme is an empowerment initiative of the Buyel’Ekhaya festival.
Finalists got to showcase their garments at the Buyel’Ekhaya Fashion Show, which took place on Friday at the Orient Theatre, under the curatorship of Eastern Cape-born fashion producer Andiswa Manxiwa. It marked the second edition of this annual event.
Nomahlubi Mazwai, founder of the music festival, said that to sustain an event such as this, a meaningful contribution had to be made to the surrounding communities. “Buyel’Ekhaya is a clarion call for all in the Eastern Cape to return and plough back into youth development,” she said.
