Cold as ice but concert will be hot as hell

Johannesburg - The announcement of the line-up for the annual Castle Lite Unlocks Concert was done in its usual dramatic fashion with attendees having to unlock details of the event by breaking a large block of ice.

Over the years the brand has brought us Drake, Kanye West, Timbaland, Travis Scott, Bryson Tiller, Wiz Khalifa and J Cole.

On Tuesday the MCs DJ Warras and Bontle Modiselle announced at the Shine Studios in Braamfontein that Chicago’s Chance the Rapper will be performing.

Between those who were there to party and a man with a chainsaw, the venue, dates and other performers – Shane Eagle, Nadia Nakai and Frank Casino – it took an hour to reveal the details.

Castle Lite’s brand director Becky Opdyke said: “Castle Lite is known for making the impossible possible and this time we wanted something totally unexpected – an ice production like no other. As we celebrate artists that have pushed boundaries by going independent in their music delivery, who better than Chance the Rapper to be unlocked in 2018?

“He, as the leader of the independent school, with Shane Eagle, Nadia Nakai and Frank Casino, will grace the Extra Cold stage in April and we can’t wait to share this experience with our audiences!”

Social media spat out complaints, saying they wanted Drake to return because the brand brought the Toronto rapper too early in his career. Truth is that Chance the Rapper is more of a small-venue guy in South Africa – not Ticketpro Dome just yet.

A little birdie whispered in my ear that J Cole might be added to the lineup to encourage ticket sales.

Chance will perform at the Castle Lite Unlocks Concerts on April 30 at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg.

Tickets are available at Computicket, R350 for general access and R590 for the Golden Circle.
