Distruction Boyz: The South African sound taking over Europe

Cape Town - Durban duo Distruction Boyz are at the forefront of gqom and are spreading their sound around the world.

The duo are nominated for an MTV European Music Award in the best African act category and will wave the SA flag high alongside SA muso Shekhinah at the ceremony taking place in Bilbao, Spain on Sunday, 4 November.

In an interview with BBC News, members Thobani “Que” Mgobhozi and Zipho “Goldmax” Mthembu discussed their unique sound and why is is so important for them to own their music.

"Ownership is a very key thing here is South Africa. A lot of people own a lot of things they do for themselves so, we want to own everything that we do.

"The sound is basically South African and we do not want to dilute it any time soon."

Following the success of their stage performance at the Sónar Festival in Barcelona in June, Distruction Boyz hope to have the opportunity to perform in Ibiza where fellow South African DJs Black Coffee and Euphonik have also performed.
