Johannesburg - Cape Town’s Dope Saint Jude, who’s been spending the past few months touring and lecturing across the globe, has released a single, Grrrl Like.

Her music has consistently been themed around transforming local hip-hop, while simultaneously challenging the predominantly male and heteronormative genre and society to change. Grrrl Like is no different.

As a rapper and producer with a defiant, life-affirming queer perspective, Dope Saint Jude’s new anthem-esque track is a catchy yet punch-you-in-your-gut track that leaves lingering messages of being unapologetically oneself and not giving a damn. With her music influenced by artists like Tupac, Grrrl Like was created to reference the underground feminist punk movement from the 90s Riot Grrrl – another of Dope Saint Jude’s musical influences – but in her own context of understanding the importance of the movement.

Constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation in her genre, Dope Saint Jude’s sound on Grrrl Like is reminiscent of the rare instrumental, electronics and unusual sound samples that were used by rapper M.I.A. during her glory days.

She tells #Trending that she’s releasing her EP, called Resilient, on 2 November, as well as a music video for Grrrl Like.
