Everything you need to know about Samas 2018

Cape Town - The twenty-fourth South African Music Awards will take place on Saturday, 2 June at The Sun City Resort and will be aired at 20:00 on SABC1.

The nominees are some of the biggest names in local music such as Shekhinah, Mi Casa, Prime Circle and more.

We’ve put together all the things you need to know about the local awards showpiece including information about the hosts, the venue, and how two nominees got disqualified from this year’s race for a Sama.

THE NOMINEES:

The Samas are about all categories of local music from kwaito to Afrikaans contemporary to hip hop and more. The organisers announced most of the nominees via Twitter as well as SABC 1’s Liveamp programme in April and May in the lead up to the show. Take a look at the nominees here.

THE TWO DISQUALIFIED NOMINEES:

Shortly after the nominees were announced The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) and the SAMA office announced - via a statement to the press -  that Tigi by Sands which was nominated in the Record of the Year category and Lake by the Ocean by Mobi Dixon which was up for Best Remix had been struck off the nominees list. One artist was struck off because he is a foreign citizen and the other because it was remix of an international song.

Sands is a citizen of eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) and as such is excluded from being considered for a SAMA. Mobi Dixon’s Lake by the Ocean is a remix of an international song which is in contravention of the SAMA rules.

Tigi by Sands was then replaced by Love Me In The Dark by Sketchy Bongo featuring Kaien Cruz.

In the place of Lake by the Ocean by Mobi Dixon is Mwanagu by Jackie Queens and VeneiGrette remixed by Enoo Napa.

THE 3 LIFETIME ACHIEVERS AND THE 1 INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVER:

Other than the winners of all the listed awards late hitmaker Spokes H as well as Steve Kekana and Mbongeni Ngema will be honoured at the awards with lifetime achiever gongs; while Shashika Mooruth will receive the International Achiever Award.

THE TRIFECTA OF HOSTS:

Local celebrity, Somizi Mhlongo returns for a record third time as one-third of the hosting team for The Samas. He will be joined by fellow radio presenter Dineo Ranaka and comedian Mpho Popps.

About his hosting duties, Somizi wrote on Instagram: "This year is definitely my last time hosting. I'm pulling all stops. I'm giving my all. I'm not holding back."
