Johannesburg - Previous Fête de la Musique festivals have brought together thousands of people in Newtown to celebrate free music. This year will mark the sixth edition, and it promises to be even better if organisers deliver on their promises.

The new Market Theatre precinct hosted journalists on Thursday where discussions were held on how to improve upon past events and to attract different age groups to the annual festival.

This is one of the few free cross-cultural events that give attendees the opportunity to learn about the rich kaleidoscope of nations within the City of Johannesburg.

Here's more about the line-up of the festival:

The festival is organised in part by the Alliance Française of Johannesburg and the French Institute of SA, which means there will be a touch of French cuisine as well as a few musical acts from that part of the world in remembrance of Youth Day.

The festivities will start on June 16 with a foretaste of the Fête de la Musique at The Windy Brow Arts Centre.

Celebrating 120 years of existence this year, this well-known cultural venue in Hillbrow will host an exclusive and free concert with Sax Machine (France) and Shef and the Kitchen (South Africa) from 15:00 to 17:00.

The line-up on June 17 is mostly made up of up-and-coming artists, but a few established acts will also feature, including Nakhane Toure, Zoe Modiga, Zuko Collective and tons more all spread out over four stages
