Johannesburg - Five-time Grammy-winning group Ladysmith Black Mambazo will honour Nelson Mandela at the State Theatre in Tshwane.

While it’s the centenary of Madiba’s birth this year, one of his fave groups will celebrate 58 years in the music industry. Ladysmith Black Mambazo was asked in 1993 by the former prez to travel with him to Oslo, Norway to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

A year later they were asked to sing at his presidential inauguration.

After many more special appearances with the icon, Mandela proclaimed the group South Africa’s “cultural ambassadors to the world”.

“We also wish to salute and dedicate this award to the founder, Professor Joseph Shabalala, who led this group from the dusty streets of Ladysmith to global prominence.”

Ladysmith Black Mambazo was founded in the early 1960s and this year they dropped their album  Shaka Zulu Revisited.

Catch their tribute to Madiba at the State Theatre in Tshwane on 1 June at 20:00, 2 June at 20:00 and 3 June at 15:00. Tickets cost R150 to R300 and are available at Computicket outlets nationwide or online here
