South Africans using the arts as a form of escape, to laugh and to cry through their anguish, has been a longstanding tradition through many trying times.
From theatre to song and film, our history of arts and culture is long and rich.
Now, in more recent times, social media users have turned to memes and viral videos as a means to convey shared experiences. Of course, sometimes these circumstances warrant a little more gravitas in response, but that's up for debate as everyone processes fear and shock differently.

To try and gauge you, our readers, regarding this, we made a poll on Wednesday morning asking whether or not songs about the coronavirus is okay.

At the time of writing, most people said "no" while some brave souls ventured a "yes".
In keeping with that minority are a few South Africans who have made songs about the epidemic. First up we have The Kiffness, who made this track for the social media video platform, TikTok.

Next we have the Ndlovu Youth Choir, who made a song to explain some basic guidelines around contracting the virus.

Finally, there is a video being widely shared on social media reportedly of The Zionist Christian Church performing a song about the coronavirus.

South Africa is far from the only country to come up with songs around the global spread of the virus.
In China, the country where the virus originated, a group of celebs including Jackie Chan, Wang Leehom, Xiao Zhan and more teamed up to record the ballad, Believe Love Will Triumph.
The song includes the lyrics: "For you, I fight with my life even in the face of a rainfall of bullets/Through the door of life and death, I promise not to leave/The hardest thing is to let it go/I will stay calm for you."

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese Health Department's Jealous Coronavirus cartoon went viral and mixes humour and information about how to stop the march of the disease that is spread through droplets in the air produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
