For most of us, when a relationship doesn't work out, the most we do is send a tweet or post a hot picture on Instagram that lets everyone know you've moved on.

But for pop stars, it's a little bit different, their relationships are public and their breakups even more so.

However, that does mean that when they're in the mood to they can release a music video that lets the world know, exactly how they feel about their ex.

Justin Timberlake famously made lots of references to his relationship with Britney Spears in the lyrics and video for Cry Me A River (remember the fairy doorstop and the lower back tattoo?).

Taylor Swift has plenty of examples, but the one that sticks out the most for many people was the song and video for We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together which Rolling Stone and everyone says is about Jake Gyllenhaal.

Now Taylor's good friend Selena Gomez is throwing some hints about how she feels about her exes: Abel (The Weeknd) and Justin Bieber in her new video, Boyfriend.

In the video, which was released over the weekend, Selena goes on a series of dates while singing about wanting a boyfriend. On these dates, she brings a magic potion that she gets from a magical looking gathering at the start.

When she realises that the men who she is on a date with aren't so great she uses that potion to turn them into frogs and keeps them in a cage in her car as she moves on to the next.

NOW LET'S UNPACK THOSE REFERENCES TO EXES:

First: The Weeknd.

In the video for Heartless, The Weeknd drives around in a convertible and licks a frog which is pretty similar to what Selena does around the 16-second mark.

HERE'S A SIDE BY SIDE OF THAT:

This isn't the first time the 27-year-old has alluded to the romance in a song or video in the past few months.

In two other recent songs titled She and Souvenir, she also appears to reference her 10-month relationship, which ended in late 2017.

In Souvenir she sings the lines that many believe references late night dates with The Weeknd in The Big Apple: "New York back in August/10th-floor balcony."

Along with: "Smoke is floating over/Jane and Greenwich Street."

HERE'S MORE ABOUT THAT TIME IN THEIR LIVES:

The second reference in the video for Boyfriend is allegedly for her famous flame, Justin Bieber.

It's incredibly subtle and happens at about 2:07 minutes into the video when Selena reaches into her cubby hole to grab the magical potion. Next to a big stack of cash and the vile is a ring box.

According to Elite Daily, it's rumoured that Justin proposed to Selena twice before their breakup. Fans have cited her song Ring as confirmation of this.

Some of the lyrics of that song are: "You all in your feelings, baby, all into me / I'm one in a billion, baby, don't you agree? / Obviously, you know, I'm aware of that / I'm breakin' hearts like a heart attack / Got him right where the carat's at."
