Fabrice Monteiro is a Belgian-Beninese creative with one of most exciting artistic visions on the African continent today. However, he began his journey as a creative revolutionary with very little focus on art. In fact, Monteiro is an industrial engineer by training. He was raised in Benin but left at the age of 17 to study in Belgium.
The artist recently did an interview about the movement that is One Source Live, African art and so much more. This will be the first of five interviews the Five Creative Revolutionarieswith that we publish in the lead up to the festival.

What does African art and African creativity mean to you?
Art was probably born in Africa, home of the first humans. For a very long time African art has, for the most, been only associated to primitive and indigenous art such as masquerades. Lately, the world is discovering that African art is much more than that and that is a great opportunity to bring people together. I believe that African creativity is playing a huge role in changing the perception of the continent. It is connecting Africa to the world but also Africans between them.
Tell us about the One Source Live movement and your part in it?
The movement is about giving a new perspective on Africa through its unique creativity with different artists from different backgrounds. Khuli Chana, Sho Madjozi and Trevor Stuurman are representing the South, Osborne Macharia the East and myself the West.
What is your role as a superhero/revolutionary?
I am humbly bringing my contribution to a moving forward continent.
Can you summarise your life in four words?
Multicultural, unconventional, rich, adventurous.
What does Being 'Absolut(e)' mean to you?
Being absolute is listening to the little voice inside each of us and being absolutely faithful to it.
Who is your African hero in the arts?
Fela Kulti, The Godfather of Afrobeat for his incomparable talent and his uncompromising commitment to his beliefs. A true freedom fighter.
