Johannesburg - Her new single, Soka Lami, is like nothing she’s done before, but Naima Kay tells DRUM every time she performs it audiences ask her to sing it again.

The 28-year-old Lelilanga hitmaker says she had a certain type of woman in mind when she wrote the song. "There are so many out there who, once they break up with their partners, never look back. I had those women in mind when I wrote the song," she says.

But what kind of woman is she? "Well, for me it depends," she laughs.

"With some exes you can see the growth and that they’ve really changed from whatever it is that might have caused the breakup, but abanye (with others) you can just see that there’s absolutely no way you can go back to them under any circumstance," she says.

"Working on this song was a very beautiful journey for me because I noticed personal growth when it comes to producing. I asked the producer who worked on my song, Thando, to produce it but when I presented the song to him I already had the beat in mind. I knew what vibe I wanted, also to show my supporters that I’m evolving and able to be versatile in my music – and I’m really glad they love it," she shares.

On 1 June the songstress will be performing Soka Lami and a few more tracks from her upcoming album, Queen Kay, which will be released in August, live in Durban.

"I’m actually so excited to be performing for the DRUM Live audience. Durban is always such a vibrant crowd and I can’t wait to give people what they want," she tells us.
