Johannesburg - In celebration of Africa Day, the Bassline Fest has brought together African artists and those in the diaspora.
The festival, which will take place on Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg on Africa Day (25 May 2019), will be headlined by Nigerian artists Asa – best known for her international hit songs such as Jailer, Fire on the Mountain – and Mr. Eazi, who is the pioneer of Banku music, a fusion sound he describes as a mixture of Ghanaian highlife and Nigerian chord progressions and patterns.
According to a statement by the festival organizers, these two artists will share the stage with ten other entertainers who’ll electrify audiences with exhilarating sounds. Dobet Gnahore (Ivory Coast), Blinky Bill (Kenya), Kommanda Obbs (Lesotho), Granmah (Mozambique), Alibombo (Columbia), Lindigo (Reunion Island), Isabel Novella, (Mozambique), TRC: Tune & Recreation Committee featuring Mandla Mlangeni and our very own Buhlebendalo who is one third of The Soil.
Tickets to the Fest are available online at the event's website and priced at R350, Golden Circle at R450 and R150 for children under 12 years old. For those who can’t make it to the venue, the festivities will be broadcast on SABC 2.
BRIEF HISTORY ON AFRICA DAY
According to SA History Online, Africa Day was first known as African Freedom Day or Africa Liberation Day and was celebrated on 15 April.
The Organisation of African Unity (OAU) later moved the date to 25 May. After the first democratic election in 1994, South Africa joined the OAU on 23 May 1994. The organisation when then replaced by African Union on 25 May 2001.
