The queen of South African gospel music Dr Rebecca Malope is dropping the mic. She confirmed to Move! that her upcoming album will be her last.

“I think that I have done a lot and the years have gone. My 36th album is so beautiful, and I have collaborated with my kids such as Dumi Mkokstad, Lebo Sekgobela, Amadonana AseWesile, Soweto Gospel Choir and many more. I wanted to say goodbye on a high note,” she explains.

Dr Rebecca says she decided to retire because it’s time to give young talent a chance. She says after more than 30 years in the music industry she wants to help new talent reach the heights she reached.

“The next generation needs our help. It’s always great to give others a chance. I will be working behind the scenes. I will give young artists some advice,” she says about her future plans.

Is this the last we’ll hear from her?

Well, she tells Move! that her fans can breathe a sigh of relief because she will continue with her TV work.

“I will drop a single once in a while. But I will not do another full album,” she explains.

Sis Ribs, as she is affectionately known, has a few pearls of wisdom for those who will carry the baton.

She warns young artists, who are still wet behind the ears in the industry, against taking advances from big record labels. She says they ought to invest in their talent otherwise they won’t see what they’re working for.

“Work on your art and make it so good that people can’t help but love it,” she says.

She goes on to add, “Please stay focused. Carry yourself with dignity and do your work the way God wants it.”

The gospel star is excited about her future plans and is currently busy working on her live show called Dr Rebecca Malope’s 36th Album Celebration Live which will take place in Durban on 27 September.
