Sam Smith bows out of Billboard Music Awards under doctor's orders after suffering vocal strain on SA tour


Cape Town – British singer Sam Smith has bowed out of two upcoming appearances at the Billboard Music Awards and the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, under doctor's orders after suffering vocal strain on his recent South African tour.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will take place on Sunday, 28 April and the Billboard Music Awards are going to take place on Thursday, 2 May. 

ICYMI: On Tuesday, 16 April Sam's first Cape Town show was cut short after just 45 minutes with the singer rushing off the stage due to vocal strain.

The announcement about the cancelled upcoming appearances was officially made via the 26-year-old's Twitter account on Wednesday. 

The statement read in part: "We apologise for the disappointment for those affected, but the primary focus at this time needs to be on Sam's recovery and health."

The Grammy Award-winner was due to perform his duet with Normani during the Billboard Awards ceremony. Normani will also no longer be performing.
