Cape Town - British singer Sam Smith stopped his first-ever Cape Town performance after just 45 minutes due to voice strain.
The 26-year-old wowed the crowd with hits like Dancing with a Stranger and Omen before abruptly leaving the stage. After a pause, a voice came on and said "bear with us while we have some technical difficulties."
Then, after a longer pause, the same voice returned and announced that Sam could not go on with the show due to voice strain.
Event organisers Big Concerts then said, via a statement on their Twitter account, "Sam Smith's CPT concert tonight has been cancelled. Unfortunately Sam Smith took strain to his voice & had to stop his performance."

No further details about refunds or rescheduling of the show were released at the time of writing.
The singer still has two more shows scheduled in Cape Town and had not released a statement about where they will go on or not at the time of writing.
Sam performed two shows in Johannesburg before coming to Cape Town.
PREVIOUS STRUGGLES
This is not the first time Sam has struggled with his voice. In 2015 the singer was forced to cancel shows to undergo vocal chord surgery.
After seeing a specialist for a hemorrhage on his vocal cords at the time, Sam said that doctors told him he needed an operation. Following his surgery the Stay With Me hitmaker was not allowed to speak or sing for three weeks, but made a full recovery.
