Cape Town - The world’s first sculpture of legendary singer-songwriter David Bowie has been unveiled – and we love it!

The bronze piece, called Earthly Messenger, now takes pride of place in Aylesbury’s Market Square, Buckinghamshire where the rock star made his debut as Ziggy Stardust.

The life-size statue with plaque features a likeness to Bowie in 2002 alongside his alter egos, with Ziggy at the front. Speakers, which are mounted above the statue, play a Bowie song every hour.

David died at his New York City apartment on 10 January 2016, after having suffered from liver cancer for the previous 18 months.

The Guardian reports that David only discovered that his cancer was terminal three months before his death.

He died days after turning 69 and only two days after the release of his 25th studio album, Blackstar. He’d managed to keep his illness a secret from the world.

Money was raised for the commemorative sculpture through grants and a £100,000 (R1,6 million) crowdfunding campaign by music promoter David Stopps.

He told Telegraph that he’s happy with how the artwork was received by music fans.

“When you get something like this people either love it or hate it. If people say ‘I hate it’ or ‘I absolutely love it’ then you know it’s real art.”

The piece was designed by sculptor Andrew Sinclair, who used the mask taken of Bowie’s face during the filming of The Man Who Fell to Earth to forge its features.

According to Daily Mail, CEO of Sony Music Rob Stringer described the statue as beautiful.

“I thought it would be one figurine and it’s actually a complete compendium of his life,” he said.
