Cape Town - When American singer Aretha Franklin died of cancer in August last year family members said she left no will, but three have now been discovered in her Detroit home, the BBC reports.

In the months since the queen of soul’s passing there has been a dispute between family members over her assets but it now seems as if Aretha, who died aged 76, left handwritten wills which state how she wanted her assets divided.

Aretha’s lawyer, David Bennett, said two wills dated 2010 were found in a locked cabinet and one from 2014 was recovered from under living room cushions. “The will, which was written inside a spiral notebook, appears to leave her assets to her family.”

Bennett, Aretha’s lawyer for more than 40 years, went on to say that “some of the writing is very hard to decipher and the four pages have words scratched out and phrases written in the margins”.

The wills have since been filed in court but Bennett told the judge he was unsure if they’re legal under Michigan law.
