We speak to the local DJ who gets to play alongside Black Coffee and more at Ultra SA

DJ Nkanyezi from Durban has been announced as the winner of Budweiser's King of Decks competition, which bills itself as South Africa's most significant online DJ search.

As part of his prize, the talented young man will perform at Ultra SA's Main Stage, in Johannesburg on 29 February, alongside some of the world's best DJ's including Afrojack, Black Coffee, DJ Snake and Steve Aoki.

Launched in December, the resulting flood of entries via Soundcloud were narrowed down to the top 3 finalists by judges DJ Oskido, DJ Sabby and Durban Gogo. The DJ finalists (Candi, Zelco and Nkanyezi) then battled against each other live on Yfm's The Best Drive show, with a popular listeners' vote deciding the winner earlier this week.

For those who might have missed it Ultra SA will take place at The Ostrich Farm, Cape Town on Friday, 28 February and at Johannesburg Expo Centre (Nasrec), on Saturday, 29 February.

As his win was announced, DJ Nkanyezi took the time to answer some quick questions from Channel24 about his journey so far: From when he knew that he loved hitting the decks to who he wants to perform with next.

HERE'S CHANNEL24'S QUICK Q AND A WITH 'KING OF THE DECKS' WINNER DJ NKANYEZI:

What was the moment that got you into DJing?

About 5 years ago, I got the opportunity to play at one of the biggest clubs in Soweto to a vast crowd. Through all the excitement, adrenaline pumping and shaking hands, I knew 'this is what I wanted to do.'

Who are you most excited to be on stage with at Ultra?

It's so hard to answer. DJ Snake, Afrojack and Steve Aoki are some of the greatest DJs. I think each one of them brings something different to their sets, so I have to say I'm excited to see all of them.

Will performing at Ultra be your first time in front of a large crowd?

No, I have performed in front of a big crowd before, but of course not on this scale. Ultra is the biggest music festival on the continent. To DJ at this event is a dream come true and the highlight of my professional journey!

What's your favourite song on the radio right now?

2 years later, my favourite song is still God's Plan by Drake. I can't get enough of it.

What DJ would you most like to collaborate with?

From South Africa, definitely Black Coffee is a pure genius. If I had the opportunity to collaborate with an international DJ, I'd love to work with Martin Garrix.

If you could choose any music artist to feature on a song of yours, who would you pick?

I would love to work with Sho Madjozi. She is making so many profound moves and breaking boundaries. I also love Ami Faku's voice. She has a beautiful soulful texture to her voice. Both ladies are incredibly talented.
