Johannesburg – Katy Perry is officially in South Africa for her Witness: The Tour show, and we went to see her on her first night.
The Chained To The Rhythm singer had her fans going crazy when she performed in SA for the first time on Wednesday. “Johannesburg, it’s taken me 10 years to get here!” she yelled as she appeared from behind clouds of smoke. And so began a great evening.
With two SA shows left, on 20 and 21 July at the Ticketpro Dome, the star still has thousands of fans who are waiting in bated breath to see her. If you’re one of one of the lucky ticket holders then here’s what you can expect from the show.
Tickets for the show on 20 July are already sold out and but fans can buy tickets for the show on 21 July here from Big Concerts.
GETTING THE PARTY STARTED
Unlike many international stars who bring their tours to South Africa, Katy did not have local artists on her opening lineup, choosing instead to allow close friends the opportunity to share her spotlight.
Expect performances by singer Elle B, who did some covers and also performed a touching tribute to her late father, as well as female duo The Dolls, who mesmerised the crowd with their techno meets classical music feel.
OUT OF THIS WORLD
Katy’s stage production is insane, making the audience feel as though we had been transported to another planet. While one set took on a space them, a different one gave more of a romantic feel with a gigantic field of roses.
At one point the singer was even raised above the auditorium as giant mechanical wings gracefully flapped behind her. Yes, it was as amazing as it sounds.
KICKING IT OLD SCHOOL
Yes, it’s called the Witnesstour (named after her latest album), but since it’s her first time here, Katy indulged her SA fans with quite a number of her classic hits. So if you’ve been a Katy Kat since 2008, this show is definitely for you. The star did a good job of sprinkling in some of her more recent work to keep newer fans entertained as well.
