Johannesburg - Celebrated jazz writer and journalist Gwen Ansell, who has watched Bra Hugh perform for most of his career, pays tribute to the legend:

“Hugh Masekela’s influence internationally is possibly the greatest of any South African jazzmen. Because his innovative spirit took him into all kinds of genres, from mbaqanga and Afro-pop to soul jazz to blends including west African hi-life, his reach to all kinds of music audiences was incredibly wide. Through that, he was able to talk about South Africa under apartheid in settings where narrower voices did not penetrate.” - Staff Reporter

Young jazz vocalist Zoe Madiga speaks fondly of Bra Hugh, saying that she learnt a lot about being relatable from a man she said had this ability by the boat load. “It was a national shock. He was a phenomenal being and musician. A true legend returning to the soil.”

Madiga first met the legend at the Bushfire Festival last year, “I was both a fan and a young musician who looked up to the legacy he had built. I plucked up the courage to speak to him and we had a laid-back conversation. He had a beautiful sense of humour.”

Madiga learnt many things from Bra Hugh but the one thing that stands out for her is his ability to relate to all people. To be able to converse across generations. The young jazz singer mentioned how she would like to emulate his laid-backness and ability to be an automatic mentor. A completely relatable soul.

“I was lucky enough to be a part of his heritage festival. I remember seeing him again and I was still star-struck. He didn’t have the strength to perform but he sat in the car and we chatted a bit. He was involved in putting that platform in place for young artists, but couldn’t fully enjoy it with the people.” – Phumlani S Langa
