The Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK) has become the latest large-scale event to announce that it will not be going ahead as planned following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The festival was due to take place from 23 to 29 March. The festival made the announcement on its official website on Saturday, 14 March.
"The decision was not taken lightly and was taken with input from health authorities, the local government, head sponsor Absa, as well as other role-players," the statement read.
"It is in the public interest of everyone involved in the festival - artists, business partners, visitors, and residents of Oudtshoorn - that we made this difficult decision," said Hugo Theart, Artistic Director of the KKNK.
On Friday the Cape Town International Jazz Festival also announced it would be postponing the festival at the same time that AfrikaBurn announced its cancellation due to coronavirus.
World health authorities are encouraging people to avoid large gatherings to curb the spread of the virus which is spread from one person to another through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
According to the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) people are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest). Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms.
As it stands, 38 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in South Africa.
