Charlize's baby is American - report

Cape Town - Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron's adopted baby boy was born in the United States, and is African-American, according to a report.

The 36-year-old South African-born star's publicist released a statement saying "she is the proud mom of a healthy baby boy named Jackson".

A source told Us Weekly that little Jackson, Theron's first child, was born in the United States, and is African-American.

"She has always wanted to be a mom. She is glad to be able to do it on her own now and is so happy to be a mom," the source told the celebrity gossip magazine.

The never-married beauty split with actor Stuart Townsend in January 2010 after nine years together.

The break-up prompted a whole new chapter in her life, telling the December 2011 issue of Vogue, "This is the first time [being single] in my life. From the time I was 19, I've been in relationships, literally gone from one to the other within a month."

In the interview, she admitted she was eager to start a family.

"I do want to have kids, yeah," she told the magazine. "I always have. I've never had a rush for it, a moment where I really wanted to do it. I don't have a panic about it.”

Twitter was abuzz with congratulations for the celebrity.

Mel Huang tweeted, "Congrats to Charlize Theron for adopting child from the US. Too many celebs forget there are so many children that need love here in the US."

Ahmed said, "congrats to Charlize Theron, our fellow Safrican who just became a mum. Adopted a baby named Jackson".

Karen tweeted. “So Charlize Theron has joined the "adopt a baby" brigade is Hollywood. Ho hum."

Starcasm said, "Congrats to Charlize Theron on adopting a baby boy - I hope he never sees mommy in 'Monster'."

It's Me Rebecca tweeted, "I want Charlize Theron to be my mom omfg that kid is really lucky.”

Brandon Mitchell  asked, "Will Charlize Theron's baby have to go to a dialect coach to learn to pronounce his mother's last name?"

A user calling himself Peter de Villiers tweeted, "Charlize adopted a baby and named him Jackson. Jackson Theron.....sounds like a mechanic from Benoni. #roots."

Theron won an Academy Award for her role as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003's Monster.

She was also nominated for an Oscar for 2005's North Country.
