Prince William goes public

London - Prince William on Saturday made his first official appearance since the announcement his wife, the duchess of Cambridge, was expecting a child.

Kate, 30, was originally to have attended the event with her husband, but did not accompany William after being hospitalized for three days earlier in the week for severe morning sickness. The royal couple announced on Monday that she was pregnant.

The prince attended the gala of a charity for homeless youth for which he serves as patron. William gave an award to tennis player Novak Djokovic for his charitable work.

The happy news of Kate's pregnancy was overshadowed on Friday by word that a nurse who took a hoax call from an Australian radio station in connection with the pregnancy has been found dead.
