Whitney coffin pic sparks outrage

Los Angeles – A photo of Whitney Houston lying in an open coffin that was printed on the cover of the National Enquirer sparked outrage from fans on Wednesday.

The photo, on the cover of this week's edition of the National Enqiurer, reportedly shows the dead singer wearing a purple dress and a diamond brooch and earrings.

According to the Daily Mail, it is said that the photo was taken inside the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark where Houston's family viewed her body on Friday, the night before her funeral.

The photo appeared on the weekly American tabloid magazine with the headline: "Whitney: The last photo!"

'So disrespectful!'

Since its publication, the photo of Houston has sparked outrage from fans on social media.

Talk show host Wendy Williams of The Wendy Williams Show tweeted: "The photo of Whitney Houston in her casket to me was just plain wrong."

Another Twitter user said: "I HATE the @natenquirer for posting a picture of Whitney Houston's open CASKET... They need to be put out of business RT (((PLEASE)))"

"Really disgusted that someone close to Whitney Houston took (and obviously sold) her photo in the casket. #disgusted," Debra @AFrugalFriend tweeted.

A disgusted Felicity May Scott also shared her views on Twitter, saying "Ridiculous that photographs of Whitney Houston in an open coffin, are on the front of some newspapers! So disrespectful!"

This is not the first tome the National Enquirer has published photos of celebs in their coffins. In 1980 they published a photo of a dead John Lennon and in 1977 one of Elvis in his coffin.

  • Pieter Janse van Rensburg - 2012-02-23 14:52

I've never been a fan of her. She is dead and burried. Later you wil hear that she has been seen alive on an island. Something so stupid shocks the powerfull America - oh please...

  • CombiChrist - 2012-02-23 15:01

What a waste, the jewellery that she was buried with. They could have donated it to a drug re-hab centre. The one that her daughter is secretly attending.

talk about a huge advertisement for graverobbers...might aswell put a sign up" half a mill right here, come and get your booty"

  • Gugulethu - 2012-02-23 15:14

Amazes me how other races dont respect the dead no matter what she died of the insensitivity. I just wonder YOU PERFECT PEOPLE if this was your relative I just wonder how you would feel!!

      Busi - 2012-02-23 15:26

Did you pay your troll fees?

      Delon - 2012-02-23 15:41

what amazes me more is how your race don't respect the living "Let the dead bury their own dead" Jesus Christ you deify your dead and blow their importance out of proportion. It was a picture taken of a dead person , not an image of the prophet Muhamed so just keep your traditional clothing on.

      Abie - 2012-02-23 15:55

Dead is dead. Your soul either goes to the right place or the wrong place. It is better to respect people who are alive, other people's property and our govertment's property.

      Trudy - 2012-02-23 16:43

Weak. She was a celebrity. It's a paparazzi pic. It's got sweet bugger-all to do with her race. Yawn.

      Lucia - 2012-02-24 08:37

Gugulethu, please leave the races thing!! If you upper that it is an issue for you, not for us. Whitney was a beautiful woman no matter what her race was!!

  • Schmee - 2012-02-23 15:23

I wonder whether they have to employ a full-time security guard to look after her grave with jewellery worth that much on her.

  • karen.morrice - 2012-02-23 15:25

Surely it's not genuine - and I've got to tell you - I googled it - good looking corpse!!

  • Leon - 2012-02-23 15:36

A known drug addict and drug carrier who used her status to get drugs through the customs. Yes she fell on hard times, but it is time people saw what drugs do to you. WAKE UP world, drugs is bad.

  • Hassan - 2012-02-23 15:38

who cares, the druggie's dead, another one bites the dust!!!

  • Christina - 2012-02-23 15:47

ok, its done, now the whole world saw it. no use playing the blame game. life goes on !!!!!!! naked you came and naked you will depart!!!!

  • Marc - 2012-02-23 16:07

@Gugu: Don't know what race has got to do with it, but anyhow...you want to be an idol a pop icon, tehn expect stuff like this to happen! Like the article said, it was done to Lennon and to Presley. So what's the hype about her picture being shown. Anyhow, she is no longer a legal subject, she has become the embodiment of the proprietary rights attached to her name and image and creative work. End of story.

  • Shirley - 2012-02-23 16:28

Dont get what all the fuss is about. Hundreds of funerals have open coffin services. If you dont want to see it-dont buy the mag!

  • Mariette - 2012-02-23 16:47

I just had a look at the picture, she looks pretty :-)

      TazmandeVille - 2012-02-23 17:14

      pretty-dead I guess ?!

  • erick.letshwene - 2012-02-23 18:12

    Have they no shame *ShakesHead*

  • mundu.olewega - 2012-02-23 18:41

    Whitney Houston died???

  • Gerda - 2012-02-23 19:09

Pity mentioning the jewelry. Someone most certainly will have a go for it.

  • karen.inward - 2012-02-23 22:53

Why take a picture of a body? Nobody looks good dead. The colour is never right and the face normally bloated. Seriously.

  • brionyl.french - 2012-02-24 06:00

Firstly no one should be remembered without a soul, this body is a shell and they have just made a mockery of respect for ones life

  • Gerald - 2012-02-24 07:16

there is nothing wrong with the picture, i think she looks very peaceful and it looks like she is sleeping.

  • Christopher - 2012-02-24 09:48

Many people do this...whats the big deal... She is just like anyone else. Except she screwed up her life with drugs and alcohol.

  • Christopher - 2012-02-24 09:54

500 000 dollars in jewellery...Where is she buried again?

  • Se-a Spencer Ikeremm - 2012-02-24 10:22

Well sh*t happens. I remember a picture of a dead Michael Jackson laying in hospital, dead, being shown EVERYWHERE!
