DA councillor crowned Mr Gay SA

Johannesburg - An Eastern Cape Democratic Alliance councillor scooped the title of Mr Gay SA 2011 in Johannesburg over the weekend.

Lance Weyer, a representative councillor in the Buffalo City metropolitan municipality, was crowned at the grand finale show at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City on Saturday night, Gay SA said in a statement.

Weyer, 24, serves on the city's health and public safety standing committee and the special programs strategic committee.

He also won the Bone Wear Underwear Model prize and received the most votes from the public.

Mr Gay World

Weyer told Mambaonline, a website affiliated with Gay SA, he was ecstatic about his win.

"I'm excited. I'm honoured. I think I'm still in shock."

Second place went to Alexander Steyn, who would be known as "Deputy Mr Gay South Africa 2011".

Casper Bosman, a 28-year-old fashion designer from Bloemfontein, was placed third.

The winners were chosen through a combination of various rounds of judging, SMS votes from the public and their performance on Saturday night.

Weyer would represent South Africa in the upcoming Mr Gay World 2012 competition, which would be held in Johannesburg next April.

In the past two years where South Africa participated in Mr Gay World, the country's representatives, Charl van den Berg (2010) and Francois Nel (2011), went on to win the global title.
