DJ Darren Scott quits over k-word

Johannesburg - Darren Scott has resigned - both as presenter on Jacaranda 94.2 and as key anchor for SuperSport during this month’s Rugby World Cup - after calling a colleague the k-word on Friday.

The colleague, Africa Tshoaedi, was at the receiving end of Scott's sharp tongue after Tshoaedi had failed numerous times to pay back monies that Scott had lent to him on several occasions.

The tongue-lashing began at a bar at the Mabula Lodge near Bela-Bela (Warmbad) where Jacaranda 94.2 had its annual team building.

According to an independent witness, Scott shouted loudly at Tshoaedi - calling him the k-word over and over while bystanders tried to silence him.

K-word

A livid Scott called Beeld on Wednesday and said he had resigned from the radio station and television channel. Advocate Les Morison, Scott’s legal representative, said after the angry call, Scott was tearful and very sorry for yelling at a Beeld reporter.

Morison said Tshoaedi had made no attempt over a long period to repay the amounts he borrowed from Scott and their relationship soured accordingly.

"After a work function, ( …) people were meeting and drinking at a bar. The colleague (Tshoaedi) joined the group and Scott told him people who don’t pay their debts were not welcome.

"He (Tshoaedi) then left, but returned later. Scott saw this as provocation and used strong language - calling him the k-word."

Jacaranda 94.2 informed Scott on Monday that the matter is being investigated.

The management has called both employees to order and there are now reportedly no bad feelings between the two.

Tshoaedi did not want to comment.

Just Plain Breakfast

Morison said Scott is under a lot of pressure stemming from his public responsibilities.

"After what happened he is falling apart. He feels very sorry. He is not normally a person who does these types of things."

Morison said Scott was plainly gutted by everything and his main regret was not having enough time to explain what happened.

Scott also complained to Beeld on Wednesday that he did not have enough time to explain his side of the story. Beeld on Wednesday sent its first message to Scott at 14:42.

Morison said Scott is emotionally exhausted and will withdraw for a indefinite period from his duties.

Scott would have been SuperSport’s principal anchor in South Africa during the Rugby world Cup matches which starts on Friday.

The presenters Peter Davies and Neil Andrews will now take over Scott’s SuperSport duties for the tournament.

SuperSport spokesperson Clinton van der Berg said it is not clear yet when Scott will appear on television again.

East Coast Radio

Spokesperson for Jacaranda 94.2, Jenny Griesel, said the radio station’ management has already started discussing changing the Just Plain Breakfast programme with its production team.

The radio station’s management is not sure whether they will continue to air the breakfast programme, she said.

Meanwhile, The Witness reports that Scott is also leaving East Coast Radio (ECR) in December, after four years of accompanying listeners home on the drive time show.

ECR programming manager Naveen Singh on Wednesday described Scott as an excellent broadcaster who really had the hearts of ECR listeners.

Singh said: "We were really sad to see him go, his knowledge of sport and music were amazing (…) He had a unique character which the listeners loved, especially when it comes to pulling of scams and sharing jokes."
