Cape Town – Twitter is afire with comments about Darren Scott's racial slur.
The former Jacaranda 94.2 DJ called a colleague the k-word at a team-building event recently. He has admitted to being drunk at the time and has said he regrets his choice of words.
He has since resigned from the radio station and has taken a leave of absence from SuperSport and will no longer be a key anchor for the channel during the Rugby World Cup.
Twitter users have been so vocal about the incident that Darren Scott is trending worldwide.
'No justifiable excuse'
News24 columnist Khaya Dlanga tweeted: "What Darren Scott said the K word? What happened?
I'll go even further: there's no justifiable excuse to use the K word, especially if you're White considering our history."
Actor Jack Devnarain, who plays Rajesh Kumar on SABC3's Isidingo, wrote on his Twitter page: "Racists lurk secretly in plain sight, often disguised in smiles. They're dying twice. From the poison of racism and the cancer of subterfuge (sic)".
A Twitter page for Julius Malema stated: "#DarrenScott k-word shouldn't be on anyone's vocab. For words have a way of surfacing; drunk or not = unjustifiable(sic)".
Sympathy
Meanwhile, there are some Twitter users who have expressed sympathy towards Scott.
Steve Hofmeyr said on Wednesday: "Dont worry Darren, I stated a verfiable fact & is now racist."
Twitter user TopEditorInt wrote: "You go Darren Scott! SA has become such a sorry place when incompetence, stupidity and discipline are pointed out - & called "racist slurs".
Another user, Hilton Tarrant, commented on Scott's departure from the radio station, writing: "Darren Scott gone from Jacaranda FM. And with him, a few hundred thousand listeners too. #justplainover".
