FHM model apologises for racist tweets

2012-05-04 12:13
Cape Town - Jessica Leandra is sorry.

The FHM model, who describes herself as a "glamorous blonde of Mediterranean nationality", has come under a storm of criticism after posting a tweet on Thursday that read: "Just, well took on an arrogant and disrespectful kaffir inside Spar. Should have punched him, should have".

When this raised the ire of her followers and fellow tweeters, Jessica replied: "Tweeted with anger after an incident last night. Forget it pls, I dnt stand still against sexual harassment, thats all."

'No surprise'

She took to her personal website to post an explanation of her actions, which reads: "I tweeted rather irresponsibly about an incident, using a harsh and unkind word about the gentleman who had confronted me with sexual remarks and sounds."

She also explains that she does not believe so many would be angered by her words if they had been there to witness her encounter with the "gentleman" in question.

"It is no surprise that my comment has offended many people and for this, I am apologetic."

Jessica's Twitter retraction did not stem the barrage of angry and disbelieving replies she was receiving, and she fought back with: "Would u all stop! These are the kinds of people that land up raping young girls of our country! I wasn't going to let him get away with it."

Jessica, who refers to herself on her website as "a woman of very few words… My days revolve around being kind and projecting a kind nature", has since deleted her offensive tweet, as well as another angry post: "Highlight of my weekend? Almost punching an #Engen petrol assistant. No tolerance for rude African monkeys whatsoever!"

FHM title to be stripped?

A Twitter campaign has been started that calls on men's magazine FHM to strip Jessica of her FHM Models 2011 title.

Twitter user @RickyBynight wrote: "Motion to have@FHMSouthAfrica strip@JessicaLeandra of her 2011 Top 100 placing for being racist. All those in favour RT".

FHM South Africa have also reacted to Jessica's words on Twitter: "We're horrified that any1 would say such things! Those attitudes have no place in society or FHM! [sic]"

FHM editor Brendan Cooper told Eyewitness News, "We are appalled by Jessica's moronic, racist tweets. She in no way represents our brand."

What do you think of Jessica Leandra's apology - sincere or not? Send us your thoughts and comments.

  • Mfundi - 2012-05-04 12:27

She said publicly what she says all the time in the privacy of her home. Not so smart now. Also a publicity stunt because no one knows who she is.

      Chris - 2012-05-04 13:19

@Mfundi, this next time year no one will know she is either. The only thing she'll be remembered as is an absolute disgrace.

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-05-04 23:11

Simply - it was wrong for her to say that. If she was harassed - she should have spoken to the person - not become derogatory in a public read. Two wrongs certainly do not make a right!

      henrileriche - 2012-05-05 12:00

Though it wasn't the smartest thing to say, I must admit i wonder about South African's priorities sometimes. Most of the time I think South African commentators just comment on what is socially acceptable than really thinking. Now let me state again if you missed the first sentence. It wasn't the wisest comment, but let's say this woman was raped, and she used the k-word. What would the responses be? Would you attack the victim for her "racist" comment? Or would you rather attack the attacker, because in all the victim is responding on an incident? I've not been there to see what the black guy did, but but it seriously let me question morality of South African's, their values, and list of priorities which does look very twisted and suspicious to say the least. Let's face it people. In SA being a rapist, murderer or a paedophile is more acceptable than being a racist, or using a racist word. South African's get your act together. Some people are overly obsessed with race, and it's soooo yesterday. Get your priorities in order!

      Nina - 2012-05-07 10:39

What a wishy washy "apology" if it can be called that. The mere fact that she used that word but she is someone born post the apartheid era says alot about her. Also shows this was not just a slip up but displays who she really is. Disgusting! She needs to get over herself, I hope she pays dearly for this.

      VichusSmith - 2012-05-07 16:31

If this was a planned publicity stunt, then she might want to consider a more intelligent one next time. I think running down the street naked would've gotten her less flack.

  • marshall.one - 2012-05-04 12:27

Unfortunately (or fortunately) these kinds of utterences reflect your beliefs. No apology can change that. So try to save your career if you must, but you'll never truly believe your own lies. And neither will I.

  • thabo.vilakazi - 2012-05-04 12:27

She brought it to herself and i wish this teaches her a lesson

  • Gareth - 2012-05-04 12:31

That article was 2% apology and 98% excuse making. She obviously didn't mean the apology.

      johncarlos.biza - 2012-05-04 13:08

better still, she complains about a petrol attendant being rude...I wonder if she finds her own language polite.

      Chris - 2012-05-04 13:20

This spoilt little brat just got a taste of reality... lots more of it to come for her.

      Thabiso - 2012-05-04 13:25

Well this is a serious crime again humanity, this shows racism still exist even after 18 yrs of freedom. Though is not violent. I lv to congratulate the FHM for the steps they took against this problem.

      Manny - 2012-05-04 15:57

Like all the other apologies that are uttered each day for worse atrocities? Today we say something and then casually apologize the next - its common practice.

      kenny.liebenberg - 2012-05-04 16:18

@ Thabiso - After 18 years of freedom for this young country, all I can see that have changed is basically nothing! Rape and murder is crime against humanity!

      susanna.jane.coleman - 2012-05-05 19:02

yes, and 100% insincere. why would she use the word 'gentleman' for someone who allegedly made inappropriate remarks, if she wasn't being sarcastic?

  • Ndira - 2012-05-04 12:34

    strip her fhm

      CombiChrist - 2012-05-04 14:07

      yeah, naked :-)

  • pupuru - 2012-05-04 12:40

here she beleived to have solid thinking that what she used was appropriate and says "...that she does not believe so many would be angered by her words if they had been there to witness her encounter with the "gentleman" in question" now this means the apology is just a meaningless. this futher shows that this thinking of hers about certain people in this country is entrenched and very solid in her mind.it is very sad for the future society indeed

  • AdeleFHM - 2012-05-04 12:42

OMW- Be careful what you say and where you say it. Anger is an evil thing. Stop think and then act. Respect is always the key

  • Nockx - 2012-05-04 12:46

Sorry My a$$. You racist. That's what you are.

  • Sapepa - 2012-05-04 12:47

The thing with words is that we use words that we are familiar with. Which to me says she is very familiar with the word. so quite frankly her apology doesn't mean anything.

      Morne - 2012-05-04 22:49

Hey rocket scientist, the whole of Africa is fimiliar with that word. Some just choose not to use it out of respect, but remember now, respect is earned and frankly there is not alot going around.

      Sapepa - 2012-05-05 14:22

Familiar in the sense of using it regularly!!! Your logic is flawed! Im not uneducated like u think most of us are u know. Unlike you, who has no idea of crimen injuria, I know that legally you dont have to respect anyone for your right to dignity to be upheld. Think before you speak of something you really know nothing about!

  • warren.groves - 2012-05-04 12:48

I'm sad to say I was friends with her on Facebook *unfriend*

      Leanne - 2012-05-04 13:09

Did i read somewher that shes of mediteranian descent? Maybe she should ascend back there. Sa does nt need rubbish like her

      Alida - 2012-05-04 14:25

@Leanne: you have just almost stooped to her level with THAT remark! Also, use a dictionary to check your spelling, punctuation and grammar...

      Morne - 2012-05-04 22:53

Gonna miss you Warren! Leanne-who died and appointed you as Queen of Africa to tell people where they should live. Such arrogance!Tsk!

  • johncarlos.biza - 2012-05-04 12:48

Bugs me to death how people will be blatantly racist and still reject the label. Atleast have the integrity to accept what you are...then the rest of us will know we should ignore you.

  • cindy.swiegelaar - 2012-05-04 12:51

Wow, its been a long time since i read comments of different cultures, religions and colour and they are all agreeing - and the best part is "They are all South Africans" - well done you posters, that is what we truly need, every single person to stand together, and stand up together against a young, stupid immature girl, as in this situation. (true.. I also did not know her till now), but not made famous with honour so sad actually.

  • ngonimclean - 2012-05-04 12:59

Twitter- the new age celebrity self destructive confession booth

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-04 13:26

Hardly, if anything it heightens their career, so sad.

  • agueorguiev - 2012-05-04 13:02

The light's on but nobody's home..?!? "The gentleman who had confronted me with sexual remarks and sounds..." What was the model wearing, I wonder, to illicit such attention?

      SellingGuru - 2012-05-05 04:01

Ague, you're a disgrace to civilized mankind. Whatever she was wearing was no invitation or permission for sexual harrassment. Stick with the issue.

      dewalds3 - 2012-05-05 09:51

Ague, tanks for providing us with the context in which this lady made her unfortunate tweet. Please do not remove this comment, News24 - the other side of the story is important for the sake of South Africa's future.

      Diana - 2012-05-05 12:21

Sorry man but are you from the stone age? After all reason you guys always pay attention to girls which wear something open and provocative and mock the modest and now you blaming Jessica for wearing "inappropriate" dress? You are a hypocrite.

      Diana - 2012-05-05 13:03

@myself sorry made a mistake forgot to take out a word "reason" in my previous post just became angry with Ague.

      Aly - 2012-05-06 14:36

Actually, that's pretty dumb - you show just how sexist you are. You think men are incapable of behaving like human beings as soon as they see some skin? Are YOU like that? Do you have to insult or assault a woman because of what she wears. When you go to the beach you must have a whale of a time losing control of yourself, what with all those girls in bikinis...

  • Ted - 2012-05-04 13:04

A beautiful moron. Beauty without brains. If the magazine is for males...which males?

  • Juanita - 2012-05-04 13:05

A silly angry egotistical rascist cow who spouted what is in her heart. Apalling that any young person in the public eye is so uncouth

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-04 13:27

Wow, and you such an angel?

      dewalds3 - 2012-05-05 09:50

Juanita, your insults against her are not that bad, of course?

  • lonhle - 2012-05-04 13:06

I can't take a jog or a mere walk to Pick 'n Pay without men making sexual and degrading comments about me. Depending on how I feel, I either keep quiet or say, \Your mother\ cause it's the act that angers me, not the amount of melanin the perpetrator has.

      Gareth - 2012-05-04 13:11

Even the your mother comment is unnecessary, insult the person actually commenting if you must, not his parents.

      lonhle - 2012-05-04 13:26

Maximus your response has no foundation because you do not know me personally. Make an argument, don't be senseless. Gareth I'm not pardoning it but try to imagine what the perpetrator would have said prior to my \your mother\ response. I'll say it less though cause as you've pointed out, it's unnecessary.

      johncarlos.biza - 2012-05-04 13:37

@lonhle but atleast you say it in your mind/to the guilty parties. You don't publish it on social networks to offend people who had nothing to do with it.

  • Ruan - 2012-05-04 13:08

      Jerzy - 2012-05-04 15:10

  • anneliese.burgess - 2012-05-04 13:12

stupid bimbo. racism is ugly and its stupid and its dangerous. i only wish this blonde babe in her bikini would realise how dangerous it is. clearly she doesn't.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-04 13:28

      And your insult differ how?

      Morne - 2012-05-04 23:01

Ooh mommy, they called me names and said I must shut up! Childish, to say the least.

  • Ronnie - 2012-05-04 13:14

Thats a spainaird for you they are notorius racists, it shows she doesn't understand our history. South Africa doesn't such morons, I am sure black and white countrymen share the same sentiment.

      Alida - 2012-05-04 14:37

@Ronnie: "Spainaird"? Oh you mean "Spaniard"... I must of missed that fact in the above story but I did read "Mediterranean"... Mediterranean includes, Spain, Italy, Greek and Portugal... Did you ever think that she may have been born in SA and therefore is a 'white countrymen'. @Tankiso: I agree with you 100%. One can simply ignore them and not stoop to their level...

      Sam - 2012-05-05 21:21

@Alida: 'I must of missed that fact'? Oh, you must mean 'I must HAVE missed that fact'.

And yet there are millions of men who go and buy the magazine with that photo? Seems to me women have it all figured out and the men who pay for it are the real idiots.

  • Thando - 2012-05-04 13:17

It was very immature of this Jessica 2 display such racial profiling as a role model of young aspiring South Africans. Her utterances really reverse th racial tolerance we r trying 2 promote in our rainbow country.

  • Peter - 2012-05-04 13:18

Hell how digussing of a lady to defend herself and express her disgss in the most offence matter and words possible. How cruel on a potential rapist! How disgusting of FHM to be more concerned in how a potential rapist is treated than the lady which was offended.Peter Botha

  • Roy - 2012-05-04 13:38

You go girl. At least you stood up against a person who thinks that because he is black he can say and do as he pleases and if things don't go his way he can use the racist card and makes a white person apologize for their disgusting manners. This is the problem in the country that people like this "maaifoedie" think that they can do and say as they please. A pity that you never had a man next to you who could have slapped his face. As for some of the remarks made about your face and beauty,I think you are a beautiful woman and I hope you go a very long way in any venture you do regarding modelling.

      Sango - 2012-05-04 13:47

no one used the race card here this spoilt brat did. She went on twiter and called people names now it back fired. You go girl you made things worse for you racist. she confronted the guy she didn't have to abuse twiter.

      sabongam - 2012-05-04 13:49

You're an idiot Roy...You only know her side of the story...I'm not saying what he did was right if its true but her racist remarks don't justify her actions. By the way, are you the man who was going to slap the "gentleman's" face? Ja,and I'm sure he probably would have looked at you since he has no arms to fight back...

      johncarlos.biza - 2012-05-04 13:53

"you stood up against a person..." No she did not. She just posted garbage on her Twitter account

      Hugo - 2012-05-04 14:16

Roy W "As for some of the remarks made about your face and beauty,I think you are a beautiful woman and I hope you go a very long way in any venture you do regarding modelling" this marks the end of her career but that should be good news for you because she will certainly come back to earth and your good self might get a shot because you sound smitten.

      lonhle - 2012-05-04 14:23

Lol o my! Dude, he didn't say that because he is black. Black isn't a person. It's merely a race!!! He said that because he doesn't have manners. The same way she didn't make a racial slur because she is white. Because being white doesn't automatically make you racist. She chose to be racist, he chose to be ill-mannered. Don't involve the rest of us man!

      Themba - 2012-05-04 17:50

  • DuToitCoetzee - 2012-05-04 13:58

All I can say of this girl is that she put her foot in it and instead of stepping out of it she try to correct herself by putting the other one in as well. I am going to ignore what she said and the fact that she apologize. The courts have this type of approach when they think people are not "fit" to stand for a trail. Please excuse me women, but I am going to write it as a "blonde joke". Giving her more attention will not justified the intelligence to do it.

  • Willem - 2012-05-04 14:01

Well I guess she can't photoshop that mistake out like all her FHM photos.

  • Marriette - 2012-05-04 14:04

she is the arrogant one... who in this day and age uses that word... if it can come out her mouth it means she was thinking it, so its useless to apologize for speaking out loud.... Sis....... she must go to her mother and wash her mouth with soap...

  • Annelize - 2012-05-04 14:07

My girl, jy moet onthou, jy kan dink wat jy wil, maar nie se wat jy wil nie...

  • Teuneman - 2012-05-04 14:08

She was provoked. You don't put liquor in front of an ex-alcoholic. As such you should'nt make remarks that will provoke racism. I say give us a word that we can call you if we get pissed off at you.

      lonhle - 2012-05-04 14:13

So don't put a different race in front of a racist? That argument has no substance. What would she have said if he was white? Yes she was provoked. He must have insulted her bad. But she could have sworn. Cursed his mother but she chose to go for colour.

      Mike - 2012-05-04 14:20

We know Leandra we know, you walked into the store/place and must've had your skimpiest bikini on and hope to not attract attention..Ofcourse he was vulgar but your mind displays a deeply moronic (quote/unquote) attitude --I never udge, but you just been SELF-judged!

There's no doubt what she said is wrong. But, think of it this way, what is worse: using the "k" word or sexual harassment. In addition, we don't know exactly how far this sexual harassment went. For all we know she could have been threatened by rape.

      Hugo - 2012-05-04 14:23

sexual harrasment is a serious crime in SA because of the high prevalence of rape.If it was anything,I am most certainly sure FHM would have taken the matter up with the SAPS.

      Theresa.Langford - 2012-05-05 20:53

Who you trying to kid Hugo? Instead of trying to help her or finding out the real story, FHM just distanced themselves from her!!! Because of people like you!
