FHM suspends writers over rape posts

2013-07-16 18:00
Johannesburg - Two writers at men's magazine FHM have been suspended for making comments about correctional rape on Facebook on Tuesday, City Press reported.

"FHM was horrified to learn of the incredibly offensive comments made by two of our staff members on their private Facebook pages," editor Brendan Cooper told the newspaper.

"These comments in no way reflect FHM's values. The opinions expressed are hurtful and deeply offensive and entirely unacceptable to FHM’s management."

He said immediate disciplinary action would be taken against the magazine’s features editor, Max Barashenkov, and editorial assistant Montle Moorosi.

A status updated posted on Barashenkov’s Facebook page started a social media storm on Tuesday.

The update read: "I propose correctional rape and sterilisation for any white person who twerks."

To twerk is to dance by vigorously shaking your bottom.

One of Barashenkov’s female friend's rebuked him saying correctional rape should never be condoned.

Moorosi then commented: "I think rape can be quite fun if executed in a romantic manner. Like saying ‘I love you’ before you slip a roofie [Rohypnol, a sedative] in her Earl Grey tea."

Facebook friends derided the comments to which Barashenkov replied: "I myself was a victim of correctional rape, so I can make jokes about it."

Cooper said: "They’re actually nice boys. But having these comments linked to my brand [has] me absolutely furious."

The thing is that people are entitled to their own opinions no matter how obscene that they are. When you start firing or suspending people for voicing their own opinions in their personal capacity then you're crossing a dangerous line - where do you draw the line between what is and isn't acceptable? These petitions and public outcries over someone's opinions shows the inherent fascist elements in society. If you don't agree with someone, ignore them and move on. Besides - these guys are obviously just attention seekers.

      Lynda Smith - 2013-07-16 19:50

@Bob... They work in the media which means that they signed a document to say that they will not bring their brand into disrepute... That is a dismissable offense... But be THAT as it may, your comment shows exactly why strong action must be taken against them. Joking about rape, defending rape or even protecting somebody's right to do both of this can only be described as morally reprehensible. And the mere fact that you can not see how wrong this situation is tells me that this generation cannot possibly sink any lower... You do NOT turn a blind eye to somebody advocating something sonrepugnant! If you do then you are as guilty as those who perform the act. Stop protecting the "human rights" od criminals... Because sir if you EVER tried to fix the broken body and mind of a person who sufferedbthrough this then you will never EVER turn a blind eye. Closing your eyes and ignoring it does NOT stop this travesty...

Can we just stop using the word correctional and rape in the same sentence, never mind adjacent to one another. rape is rape is rape, is never funny! End of story. These two bafoons deserve to be suspended.

  • Dawn Pithie - 2013-07-16 19:05

Some of the comments on this forum just make you realise that we have such a long way to go before we get over our acceptance of completeley unacceptable behaviour. Please all you people who think it's a joke or condone it - present just one person who came out of a "correctional rape" either corrected or with their soul intact. Violent non-consensual sex can NEVER be condoned, and until we all realise what a violation of human rights this is we will never overcome the enormous problem of sexual abuse in this country. It's not acceptable EVER, even as a "joke". These two 'writers' should know better.

      grantcallaway - 2013-07-19 10:24

If the guy had written "any white person who twerks should be shot in the head", would you be so passionate about him condoning murder? Of course not...not least because it would never have even been reported!

  • Benny Julius - 2013-07-16 19:09

People don't realise that'private'postings on social media sites can affect their jobs and it amazes me what some idiots put out there on FB and twitter. These two could well lose their jobs and deservedly so.A lot of employees check things like this out before employing someone.

  • Sparkle Duiker - 2013-07-16 19:14

    Fire them

  • Thamsanqa Macgesh Ngeshane - 2013-07-16 19:18

cn some1 pls help me out here wht is correctional rape immediately whn u say "correctional" u presume that being gay or lesbian is "incorrect" rape is rape

      grantcallaway - 2013-07-19 10:29

It's called correctional rape because thats what the perpetrators believe they are doing (not what society believes they are doing). A little bit like prisons being referred to as "correctional services". The intent is to change the ways of the cons...even though it very seldom actually works that way.

  • Chaldon Venter - 2013-07-16 19:18

What i don't understand about this is that next week when FHM bring out a new mag half of the jokes would also be as sick as what this guy wrote on his facebook page. i mean have you read some of the content that FHM publishes...? Sounds like a double standard too me?

      BatongaBoro - 2013-07-16 19:54

i stopped reading FHM years ago, when they decided it would be a good idea to print jokes about Hillsborough. i am amazed to learn that the magazine still even exists.

  • Xuan du Plessis - 2013-07-16 19:26

Most disgusting comment! Sis! And the mentality that goes with it.....laughable!!!!

  • Robert Frankol - 2013-07-16 19:33

    Despicable

  • BatongaBoro - 2013-07-16 19:52

novelist and journalist Tony Parsons put it simply - "never ever write anything on social feeds on the internet that you would not say in public, or would not object to appearing in 20ft letters in the sky with your name associated with it". an easy rule or way of thinking. of course, lots and lots of cowardly types love the anonymity of the internet and behave like animals.

  • Andre Stuart - 2013-07-16 20:23

No more FHM for me as they saw some talent in these idiots

  • Sbo Kubeka - 2013-07-16 20:24

  • George Pito - 2013-07-16 20:35

  • Faith Keabetswe Leburu - 2013-07-16 22:15

Yeah not funny guys... Gotta know boundaries.

  • Corrie Robb Murdoch - 2013-07-17 09:04

So because you were a victim of correctional rape, which i presume means prison rape it allows you patronise the situation...I am not a prude and actually think the comments in context of a personal facebook page and dancing are extremely amusing, but really guy - you cant do that if you are magazine editor...just not cricket!

      grantcallaway - 2013-07-19 10:33

He's an FHM editor. Putting up a bad joke and/or sexist opinion on his private page would be something similar to Hugh Heffner putting pics of half-naked girls on HIS social page. Its not like the guy worked for Time Magazine...

  • Sarah Claire Picton - 2013-07-17 09:47

    i miss Montle's memes.

  • margo.vorster - 2013-07-17 11:10

Obviously a lot of this banter going on at fhm office...and maybe it's condoned amongst the boys? Wonder if their girlfriends thought they were smart now?

  • Dean Harmse - 2013-07-17 15:12

I didn't even know what "twerking" was. had to Google it...

      grantcallaway - 2013-07-19 10:35

Its irritating! Guy should've just said that twerkers should be shot. Nobody would have batted an eyelid...because murder is totally acceptable you know... :P

  • Jono Le Feuvre - 2013-07-19 16:09

So the writers get fired. What happens to Ross MacDonald and the other three people who "liked" the status? How far should the fallout reach?
