Cape Town - On the eve of Springbok flank Schalk Burger's wedding to Michele de Munck on Saturday, his family was involved in a bitter feud.
The family dispute was so bad that Schalk's uncle, with whom he has a good relationship, did not attend the farm wedding in Welbedacht outside Wellington.
The discord between the Springbok's 56-year-old father Schalk and his brother, Paul, 50, is so severe that Paul obtained an interim protection order against his brother.
Paul did this after Schalk snr apparently flipped a table onto him at a restaurant in Wellington.
This is the third time this year that Schalk snr is in trouble with the law.
'He attacked me physically'
Their sister, Laura White, 53, also joined the fight when she in turn obtained a protection order against Paul. She alleges that Paul threatened her in SMSes.
This led to an outburst three days after the death of their mother, Mavis Laura Burger, 88, on November 15 in a hospital in Paarl.
Paul on Saturday admitted he asked for protection from the police against his older brother after he confronted him on November 18.
"I sat on the porch and drank coffee when he and Myra (Schalk snr's wife) drove past and stopped when they saw me. Schalk got out and said he tried to contact me, but that I ignored him.
"I told him he could not hurt, hit or terrorise me. It was then that he flipped the table onto me. He threw it against my stomach and chest. Other people saw it happen.
"Schalk alleges that he 'gently pushed' the table, but he threw it onto me. He attacked me physically - I feel I should be protected against him. Myra saw it all."
Wellington house
Rapport learned that police officers came running and helped Schalk snr back into his car.
Report on Saturday repeatedly tried to obtain comment from those involved.
According to Paul, the biggest disagreement arose when Schalk wanted to evict him from their mother's Wellington house immediately after her death.
Paul and Laura lived in the house, which belongs to Schalk, up until their mother's death.
Paul, a trademark developer from Wellington, did not attend a memorial service for his mother in Welbedacht last week.
Schalk and Myra are the owners of the wine estate where the wedding was held on Saturday.
Permanent court order
A text from Paul to Schalk jnr, in which Paul informs his nephew about the protection order, says it's a fact that he (Schalk snr) will go to jail if he violates the law: "I should've done it 20 years ago already."
Neither Schalk snr nor his attorney, Chris Faure from Wellington, or his other brother, Johann, 54, responded to Rapport's messages.
The deadline for the protection order is February 8 when Schalk snr has to demonstrate why it should not be made a permanent court order.
