Cape Town – 5FM DJ Gareth Cliff has responded to a complaint laid against him for reportedly making a sexist comment.
On Monday Cliff posted the following on his blog: "I accept that some sensitive people may have felt the comment offensive, but who (unless they were described by it) would consider themselves so described if there were no truth to the insult?"
According to previous reports, eThekwini DA councillor Tex Collins laid a complaint with the BCCSA after being "appalled" by Cliff's remarks during an interview on his show with Angela Larkan of Thanda.org, an organisation which helps children left vulnerable due to HIV/Aids.
Cliff reportedly said "girls of 22 usually do nothing but lie on their backs with their legs open", after hearing that Larkan started her humanitarian work at that age.
According to Cliff's manager, his statement was misunderstood and he actually said most 22-year-olds were "looking to have fun".
Cliff has denied being sexist, writing: "I refute the allegation and consider it insulting in turn to be called sexist. The reason I had Angela on my show is because she is precisely the opposite of the kind of girl I am alleged to have offended."
The registrar for the BCCSA has said that the complaint would be investigated.
The complaint against Cliff comes just days after Jacaranda 94.2 DJ Darren Scott quit his job following a racist slur he made towards a colleague.
