Gareth Cliff's arrest welcomed

Johannesburg - The arrest of radio DJ Gareth Cliff for speeding was welcomed on Thursday by Gauteng's community safety MEC.

"By excessive speeding, the motorists are not only putting their lives in danger, but also endangering other road users," MEC Faith Mazibuko said in a statement.

She called on motorists, irrespective of their social status, to be cautious on the roads and warned that law enforcement would be on the lookout for those who broke the rules.

"Our roads are not a racecourse. For those that want to race they must make use of places such as Kyalami... not our public roads."

Case postponed

Cliff was arrested after he was caught driving at 183km/h in a 120km/h zone near Pretoria on Tuesday night. He was later released on bail. He appeared in the Centurion Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The case was postponed to March 15 because there was an inquiry into whether his licence should be suspended. The case will continue in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.

Cliff faces charges of excessive speeding and reckless or negligent driving.
