Gordimer a patriot - Zuma

Johannesburg - South Africa has lost a great patriot, renowned writer and an outstanding voice for equality and freedom following the death of Nobel laureate and writer Nadine Gordimer, President Jacob Zuma said on Monday.

In a statement released by the presidency, Zuma said Gordimer was part of a group of brave men and women who championed the social role of art, music and literature in advancing the struggle against apartheid.

"We wish to express, on behalf of government and the entire population, our sincerest words of condolence to her family, friends and the whole spectrum of the literary community. May her soul rest in peace," Zuma said.

Earlier on Monday, law firm Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs said in a statement on behalf of the Gordimer family: "Her son Hugo and daughter Oriane and her caring helpers were with her... A private memorial service will be announced at a later date."

Gordimer was 90 years old.
