Happy hair in winter

2015-06-22 10:57

The first hair care event hosted by #Trending and candi&co evoked gasps and laughter as the women in the audience were given the real talk about taking care of their hair correctly. Kabelo Molefe from Mizani hair care products called out every bad hair care technique women all over the country have been guilty of at least once. He was particularly emphatic about the mistakes made during winter. We asked him for a few pointers.

What effect does winter have on hair?

Seasonal changes and lifestyle [not drinking enough water, or a poor diet] can have damaging effects on hair. In winter, hair naturally loses a lot of moisture and hair in plaits gets even less moisture because natural oils take longer to travel to the tips of the hair. This means hair becomes dry and brittle.

What are the common winter hair mistakes?

Women plait and weave their hair for longer than the advisable six weeks. Plaiting involves a lot of pulling and stress, which weakens the hair and hairline. In addition, not washing weaves and plaits regularly, or not allowing hair to dry properly, can cause bacteria to build up and can lead to skin infections. Scratching the scalp with pins, combs or pens breaks the skin, making it vulnerable to infection.

What does hair need in the colder months?

Hair in winter needs more moisture because it loses a lot of natural oils. To replace the natural oils, one needs to use products with natural oils [sesame, jojoba, almond, avocado, apricot, olive fruit, sunflower and argan]. You need a balance of moisture to keep hair soft and you need protein to keep it strong.

What are hair essentials in winter?

Shampooing and conditioning the every week using a sulphate-free shampoo. Using more moisturising products for the and scalp, but products with natural oils – no mineral oil or petroleum-based oils, so no foods or oil moisturisers. A night treatment every two days is also advisable to put moisture back into the hair overnight.
