It was Miss World versus the rugby last night

Johannesburg - South Africa's first Miss World, of 56 years ago, Penny Coelen-Rey, is annoyed, to say the least.

She told Netwerk24 she missed most of the Miss World competition on Sunday night, won by Miss SA Rolene Strauss, because the men in her house were watching rugby.

"I live in a household full of men and they wanted to watch the sevens rugby. Suddenly I heard my cellphone ring in my room and it's a friend saying I should immediately switch over to the Miss World broadcast," Coelen-Rey, 74, told the Afrikaans website.

"I had to run around to find a TV that did not have rugby on. Rolene is very, very pretty! I am quite annoyed with the men and their sevens rugby. I hope the competition gets broadcast again so that I can watch from the start."

Strauss, of Volksrust in Mpumalanga, was crowned Miss World 2014 in London on Sunday.

South Africa's sevens team defended their title on home soil by beating current series holders New Zealand 26-17 in an enthralling final of the third round of the world sevens circuit on Sunday.
