Jacaranda FM fires DJ Miguel Proenca

2013-05-13 15:37

Johannesburg - Suspended Jacaranda FM DJ Miguel Proenca was dismissed on Monday, the radio station said.

"Jacaranda FM announced today [Monday] that is has terminated its contract with presenter Miguel Proenca with immediate effect," spokesperson Masego Serape said in a statement.

She said there had been an inquiry after allegations that money collected for a 10-year-old cancer sufferer had gone missing.

Station general manager Kevin Fine said: "We have elected to terminate the contract immediately with Proenca, after due consideration of the evidence obtained during the inquiry."

Missing prizes, money

Proenca had collected money and charitable donations on behalf of Reneilwe Mashego, from Bushbuckridge, in November last year, as part of Jacaranda's involvement in the project.

Earlier this year, he reportedly gave R300, three blankets, and some clothing items to Reneilwe's grandmother Cornelia Mashego.

But it was not clear what had happened to several prizes donated by businesses in the city, including electronic equipment worth R9 000 donated by Makro, and two R5 000 gift vouchers donated by Spar Lowveld.

Serape said Jacaranda FM would deal directly with other parties affected by the allegations.

"There will be stand-in presenters on Jacaranda Regional (RMFM) between 12:00 and 16:00 weekdays and Saturdays, until a full-time replacement is announced."

Good decision. Crime doesnt pay. Even respectable people do steal?

      archmichael - 2013-05-13 18:19

That's probably the biggest misconception ever. To quote a piece from The Offspring's song Have you ever; "When the truth walks away, everybody stays, cause the truth about the world is that crime DOES pay" You'll realize that even more when you think of someone like Rockefeller and Rothschild to name only 2 of many that enriched themselves by crime!

  • Adri Mbali Noble - 2013-05-13 15:49

You should be ashmed of yourself stealing from a 10 year old. I had respect for your intentions then. #angry

  • Dickson Kgabo - 2013-05-13 16:05

    Good riddance,I'm surprised I don't see much comments as I expected .

      Elvis Thabiso Sithole - 2013-05-13 21:23

Surprised!Reason you don't see much comments is that the culprit is (not always a suspect)

  • Nadine de Villiers - 2013-05-13 16:08

    Typical of Jacaranda...

      Steve du Preez - 2013-05-13 16:42

NAdine - what is so typical of Jacaranda?? YOU have personal experience you wish to share? I think you just wanted to comment but did not realise how brainless your comment is. King Kev - your comment is just to cover for Nadine - isn't it. Either that or you miss the irony in Inklanzi's comment ... Jeez you people are narrow minded!!

      Dewald P Montgomery - 2013-05-13 17:35

King, I think you misunderstood Inhlanzi. Nadine - is jy gerook? "Typical" om 'n persoon wat van die siekes, armes en weerloses steel, te pos? Ek wens MEER plekke was so "typical" - beginnende by ons Parlement met sy 208 lede met kriminele rekords!

Swak. Stealing from a cancer patient.. Damn dude. That's pretty damn low.

      Dave Walters Mpowerfm - 2013-05-14 10:41

His mother died of cancer less than two years ago. No, he would not steal from a cancer patient.

  • Freddy van Wijk - 2013-05-13 16:25

I fully agree with the decision. How ever I am surprised that this was not also made an SAPS case.

      Njabulo Maunze - 2013-05-13 16:36

      Dewald P Montgomery - 2013-05-13 17:39

Don't run ahead of things. Nobody said just because his employment is terminated it just stops there.

  • Andre Jansen Van Vuuren - 2013-05-13 16:43

So so sad buddy! Thats not a joke.

  • Andre Jansen Van Vuuren - 2013-05-13 16:43

Its probably what he learnt under apartheids rule! :-) shame on you dude.

  • Alastair Ballantyne - 2013-05-13 16:47

Why does race always have to rear its ugly head in these comments. Its backward to think that way. We are not going to solve anything and move forward as a country and as individuals by constantly bringing colour into it. Whites, Blacks, Indians, Blues, Greens whatever, we all are living in the New South Africa, time to change the way we think. So sad to see comments like that.

      Alastair Ballantyne - 2013-05-13 17:25

@Mdumela ya I'm new but the main thing is they caught the guy and charges should be pressed against him. Colour has nothing to do with it.

      Sue Heymans - 2013-05-13 19:07

Yes tx Alastair i agree. personally i dont consider the race of the person who commits the crime, only the CRIME. Lets stick to the issue here and it is the crime of THEFT.

From a cancer patient?!! What a heartless b*st*rd.

  • Cuthbert Murwisi - 2013-05-13 17:11

    Selfish and heartless thief.

  • Nokukhanya Ngcongo - 2013-05-13 17:56

Jo he shud b ashamed Hw do u steal frm da ill? Jo people !

  • Justin Russell - 2013-05-13 18:08

My question is, will Jacaranda FM make up for what was stolen from that family? Who is worse, the guy that stole or a massive radio station who does not want to compensate for its own employees actions?

  • Jacques Loots - 2013-05-13 18:23

Haha, the situation is sad but lets not over look the fact that we live in a country where people have no compassion for one another, politicians steal from the ill and poor all the time, I hope he rots and all the thiefs in government to.

  • Gerasimos Komnenus - 2013-05-14 02:24

How grubby! Stealing from charitable donations is really scraping the barrel. Mind you its the same with the ANC who steal from taxpayers "donations". If only government officials were also dealt with like this!

  • Adepoju Mosebo - 2013-05-14 09:43

He learnt the art from a portuguese tradition of stealing from the poor and the vulnerable. In all their butcheries and restaurants, u won't find a South African. Only portuguese speaking foreigners are hired nd they get paid next to nothing. I know one guy who works in a very busy Buchery but earns R45 a day! Porto!

  • Ettienne Ludick - 2013-05-14 10:27

Amazing how people racially attack each other over money gone from 1 victim, yet when the ruling party and government steals from millions of me and you, the race card "must not be played" because its apartheids fault. 14 thousand rand in electronics (tvs hifis and other stuff), is a drop in the bucket compared to the billions gone in the public sector.
