Jub Jub's prison life revealed

Johannesburg - Convicted rapper and prison inmate Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye is burning up the airwaves in his new home.

The man found guilty of murdering four schoolboys and the attempted murder of two others following a horror smash in Soweto three years ago, has performed at the Johannesburg Medium C Prison during a prison graduation ceremony.

Officials at the prison, known locally as Sun City, said he made prisoners and their families cry last week as he sang his hit song Ndikhokhele, as well as another remorseful track from an album he recorded last year.

However, it would appear that Jub Jub is not the model prisoner many would believe him to be.

WhatsApp messages

Maarohanye, who was sentenced to 25 years in jail, is said to be in possession of two cellphones – a no-no in prison.

A visitor who attended the prisoners' graduation, who spoke to City Press on condition of anonymity, said she saw Maarohanye's friend Thato Mahlatsi showing off a series of chats on mobile message service WhatsApp which the two have enjoyed while the rapper has been in jail.

The last message Maarohanye sent to him was: "Are you coming dog?" referring to the graduation ceremony.

This would appear to add credence to the claims of Maarohanye's detractors that he is receiving special treatment in prison. He is also being housed in the Medium C prison, where inmates occupy single cells, unlike others in the notoriously overcrowded prison system.

Gauteng correctional services spokesperson Ofentse Morwane said Maarohanye did not have a cellphone to their knowledge.

"As far as we know, we don't know that. Offenders get searched from time to time," he said.

Organising gigs in prison

Mahlatsi, however, insisted his friend was doing his bit for his prisonmates.

"He is performing inside and he organises gigs," he said.

DJ Sbu Leope, whose foundation runs educational programmes and stages motivational talks for prisoners, tweeted a picture of Maarohanye delivering a lecture to his fellow inmates. His accompanying caption read: "Jub Jub giving a positive talk to amajita (the guys)."

Maarohanye also appears to be receiving support from an unlikely source.

Another photograph on Twitter shows him with his arm around his former fiancée and Intersexions actress Amanda du Pont, who came to see him in prison.

Maarohanye dumped Du Pont for singer Kelly Khumalo with whom he had a son, now three years old. Details of their tumultuous and often violent relationship were revealed in Khumalo's tell-all book.

Du Pont would not respond to e-mailed questions about her prison visit.

But in a caption of another picture of the two of them posted on Twitter, Leope wrote: "Look who I reunited at Sun City Prison Medium today."
