Johannesburg - Elizabeth Hurley was the guest of honour at a private customer event at Edgars in High Street, Melrose Arch.
Hurley, Estée Lauder’s and Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign spokesperson, and her boyfriend, former Australian cricketer Shane Warne, received a warm welcome from guests while children from the Soweto Gospel Choir sang and danced for them.
Guests got the opportunity to catch a glimpse of her as she arrived; she then signed all of their Estée Lauder purchases, of which 50% of each will be donated to the Breast Cancer Fund. Hugues Witvoet of Edgars said they would match the total amount of proceeds raised and donate it to the Breast Cancer Fund.
Hurley has been active in Estée Lauders' Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign for the past 15 years.
Hurley and Warne were in South Africa to attend the Estée Lauder Pink Illumination Ball on Thursday, which took place at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
The ball was in aid of The Estée Lauder Companies Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.
In her address to the packed room, Hurley urged the audience to help spread awareness. "If localised breast cancer is detected early, it’s 98% curable," she said, encouraging all women to check their breasts every month and women over the age of 40 to go for regular mammograms.
"Do what I do. Every year around my birthday I make a mammogram appointment. That way it’s easy to remember".
The Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign has been going for 16 years and by October this year would have raised over $50m globally in contributions to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
