Metro FM DJ axed

2011-04-01 13:20
Johannesburg - Metro FM's Breakfast Show host Kenny Maistry was fired on Thursday.

The Sowetan reports that Maistry felt "the early termination of his contract was racially motivated as there were some people at the SABC who felt that an 'Indian' should not host the breakfast show".

The station announced a full list of its new line-up on Thursday and Maistry was not moved into another timeslot. The Breakfast Show will now be hosted by afternoon drive hosts Glen Lewis and Unathi Msengana. Msengana is also the new judge on M-Net's talent show, Idols.

Maistry had a three-year contract that was to expire in March 2012, according to The Sowetan.

SABC spokesperson Kaiser Kganyago said Maistry "was not fired".

"Changing the line-up meant some people had to go, including him. To say a person has a contract does not mean we cannot announce a new line-up. We cannot divulge what is happening. It's between employee and employer."

After the ANC and Jimmy Manyi attacked coloureds in the Western Cape and Indian in Kwazulu Natal, I can only believe that this is racist. Shame on you ANC !!!

      festus.mphomane - 2011-04-01 14:39

I pity your thinking SamuelMabena...sometimes it's best to wait for and gather facts before you make such a pronouncement - accusing others of racism when in fact your stereotype could be furning it.

      Meanleader - 2011-04-02 14:15

@Fetus mpho....Samuel is making an observation , and a valid one at that . Even if the ANC(SABC)did supply a seemingly valid excuse , no one will believe them anyway , because I cannot remember a time when the ANC have told the truth especially with regards to racism , and neither can the rest of SA(except you) Now your PRONOUNCEMENT also sounds a bit premature doesn't it ? You are stereotypically sided with the ANC like the ignorant massess . Name one hounourble act or honest act carried out by government (erhm..honest in the eyes of EVERY SA citizen) We have learned to rely on the ANC to steal , lie , and be racist ! Maybe one day you two could get the intellect to see a blatent lie .

  • Bongz - 2011-04-01 13:40

What a loser, You should have exposed racism in your morning drive. It is high time the masses settle for top notch DJs, not this comedians that looting taxpayers money. Good bye and get yourself a 9-5 job like the rest of us.

      SamuelMabena - 2011-04-01 13:44

There is nothing wrong with this DJ. This is another bad SABC/ANC decision. The ANC are sending our very strong and clear message that there is no more place for all minority groups within the ANC. The minority groups needs to get clever now and start voting together!

      Darwinian - 2011-04-01 14:05

@Bongz are you a taxpayer??? I doubt it!!

      Meanleader - 2011-04-02 14:21

@bongz ... you havn't even listened to this DJ you ignorant mud flap ..... so take your dirty ANC racist rants elsewhere . There are civilised people her , and you do not fit in here ! Ans as for comedians looting taxpayers money , firstly , you don't pay for this guy , the whites and coloureds and indians do . Secondly , if you were worried about tax money being stolen , you and your troop would have axed the ANC long ago . Do you see how stupid you look ? or not ?

  • Althea - 2011-04-01 14:07

I am a breakfast show listener and I think Kenny was a remarkable DJ, I didn't see anything unfit with the show or presenters. I would Recommend Kenny to take this matter further.

      Sue - 2011-04-01 15:35

I started listening to Metro only after tuning in 1 morning and hearing KennyM. He is fantastic and not only that, but worth listening to. Speaks and sounds intelegent. Well I'm not listening to Metro no-more. I have no time foe racist fools.

  • Janine - 2011-04-01 14:19

I never listen to Metro FM but is it possible that the station just felt that it was time for a change?

  • Jou - 2011-04-01 14:20

      Meanleader - 2011-04-02 14:27

@iloveme ... you mean an April fools joke like the ANC starting it's own propaganda newspaper , or the joke of the ANC altering the Matric results to make their morons look qualified , or the joke of Affirmative action not having an end date , or the racist quota system etc...etc... If it is a joke , it is very poor humour !

It appears that a lot of radio stations are reshuffling. Just recently Classic FM got rid of a couple good DJs. They've been replaced with the news guys. I no longer listen to that radio station.

  • Licikityspit - 2011-04-01 15:16

Well I never heard of him and neither has half of SA, thats the reason he was proably fired and not the colour of his skin!

  • Mo - 2011-04-01 16:40

As an ardent metro fm listener, I would like to state that Kenny Maistry's departure had nothing to do with race. The guy passed his sell by date ages ago. Why metro fm thought it was ok to bring back the "mafutha jams" in 2009 is beyond me. I listened to his show, and every time he opened his mouth i would cringe. Simply because the guy stopped being relevant. Perhaps in another slot he would have made the cut. There was a drop in the ratings and it is because he was not the man.

      Greg - 2011-04-02 06:27

Hey Kenny M, get ya ass back to 94.7. Get rid of Wankhead and Sam the Man, Bongani who cannot sing and embarrasses himself. Keep the others, they okay. Go Kenny - intelligent, articulate..........

  • feppie - 2011-04-02 08:45

The same thing happened in Cape Town. At Heart 104.9 dj Lee Downs was leading a highly popular morning breakfast show. At the pinnacle of the show’s popularity, a dj with a darker pigmentation with no CT background was abruptly brought into Heart to replace Downs on the morning show. The changes led to lots of listeners’ complains and fans of the show staged a mini revolution. Eventually Downs was out manoeuvred. He then left for Kfm drive in a unpleasant break-up and scores of fans turn their backs on Heart. Things was never the same again for Heart!

  • Nolene Wagg - 2011-04-02 10:48

The show was BORING!! Dull and dreary voice - not the colour of your skin!!!

  • Pulverturm - 2011-04-02 11:52

Story was posted after 12h00 so it's probably not an april fools joke

  • Lihle - 2011-04-02 13:05

Ok ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SA where you are either in the Black zone or the White zone, or in the DA zone or ANC zone. In other words no grey areas and no ACDP areas. If you fire someone it's either racist and ANC inspired. If Malema f's up it's the DA press thats misreporting or it's coz he's black. For crying out loud either my countrymen and women have gone bananas or there's loads of those good for nothing agent provocateurs (remember the ol' THIRD FORCE? yeah, I mean them. This DJ chap's been moved, fired, sidestepped whatever you call it and the first "foul" cry you hear has got ANC it it. Or maybe its true...these two organisations are SO F'N powerful that anyone farts anywhere in the country does so at their behest. VIVA ANC, VIVA DA!!!

      Meanleader - 2011-04-02 14:34

Sorry Lihle .... can you repeat this in English ! This makes no sence son .... what are you trying to say ?

  • Bratt - 2011-04-02 14:31

Let me guess... they paid out the remainder of his contract? And then they want to enforce a law to get 1% of my salary while the waste money like this? There was nothing wrong with Kenny or his show. In fact, thats the only show I listened to during the week. I will listen to Glen as well with pleasure, but terminating Kenny's contract and not moving him to another slot was an unwarranted decision. Especially since they dont want to say why they axed him.

  • Bulelani - 2011-04-02 16:04

i stopped listenin 2 the B-show whn this guy started doing it, cause he doesn't do it 4 me nw that the teddy bear is back m gonna tune in again, so in short it's a good riddance.

      greywolve - 2011-04-03 13:47

your shirt in that picture says it all, get rid of the chip on your shoulder. living in the past is not good for anyone.
