Metro FM responds to #Unathigate scandal

2013-05-23 12:47
Johannesburg - Metro FM has responded to a scathing open letter addressed to DJ Unathi Msengana, in which she is accused by a fan of being rude and disrespectful to her listeners.
"We would like to request that the public at large, our audiences as well as the media allow us as the Station's Management to investigate the strongly worded letter and the contents thereof accordingly.

"Over and above that allow us the time to engage our presenter Unathi Msengana on her views and outlook in the matter at hand, after which we will make our findings as a Station known accordingly. We trust that our request will be viewed favourably," Metro FM said.

The station also promised to look into the concerns of the listener because "it [the letter] is written by a clearly disgruntled listener of the show and we as a station hold the contents of the letter in high esteem".

Metro FM went on to say that "each and every listener of any of our Show's on METRO FM is respected and appreciated by the station, hence our stance".

This statement comes after Namhla, who calls herself "an avid First Avenue listener" wrote a scathing letter to DJ Unathi Msengana in which she states how fed up she is with the way Unathi runs the show, cutting off callers and belittling their opinions.

Read the full letter on Namhla's blog here.

The letter also caused quite a stir on social media, with the hashtag #Unathigate buzzing on Twitter with many commending Namhla while others stand by Unathi.

Unathi has since responded and told SundayWorld that she had not read the letter yet, and had requested that Metro FM comment on her behalf.

"I have nothing to say. Don't put words in my mouth. If it's about my show, call Metro FM," she said.

Don't listen if you don't like the content.

      Vuyisa Dumisani Mabuto - 2013-05-23 14:42

some people have already stopped listening to the show because of "her" not the "content"

      Margaret Khoza - 2013-05-23 14:50

Dont be stupid. Unathi does not own Metro FM. It started way before she dreamt of becoming a DJ. The best DJ have came and gone and she will go. she must go. She has a lot of money now obviously.

Unathigate, Guptagate, travelgate , Nkandlagate, e-tollgate, fu....gate. What happened to the use of remote controls, from what I heard this whole thing is sour grapes from Idols, give us a break , everything has to be a scandal, fire Unathi and you will have lost my family as your listeners.

  • Lee Ntshabele - 2013-05-23 13:55

I read the open letter. I think yes, the writer have a serious profound statements. People might over look the way Unathi run the show. The truth is people need to be respected. Vuyo Mbuli was known as a calm and very professional person and I advice his colleague take him as an example. If Unathi is controlling person at his house, then she's at wrong place.

  • Mamorena Khanye - 2013-05-23 14:05

Hai this Unathi girl shes full of herself ask me i know her behind the scenes of Idols she love only whites when it comes to black ppl shes always on hurry since then i disliked her so much she only takes pics with whites without complaining but when it comes to africans she will tell you that she has to go home she has kids waiting for she complains and im not surprised about the letter

She is the reason I stopped listening to Metro in the mornings. Her attitude is so irritating.

  • Raoul Ndessabeka - 2013-05-23 14:32

"Me and my husband" Unathi finally got what she deserves, the "TRUTH". Good!

  • Motlhodi MaTemoso Matlolokwe - 2013-05-23 14:40

please bring Azania back or replace her with Carol Ralefeta. pls.

  • Margaret Khoza - 2013-05-23 14:45

The truth is, we won't have a lot of Vuyo Mbuli's out there. People take themselves too seriously, the think they are Demi Gods and that the sun shines out of their behinds. I dont care if her friends come up in numbers to support her, the bottom line is, she is rude and she is on Metro FM. This is not her household, it's Radio. This letter is long overdue.

  • Margaret Khoza - 2013-05-23 14:46

She is a true Unolali this Unathi.

  • Vuyisa Dumisani Mabuto - 2013-05-23 14:51

This is all about customer service we are all expected to be proper characters at our work place(s) to achieve customer satisfaction and keep them coming back, how you treat and your opinion of people in your private space must stay there "your private space". The lady that wrote the letter is not personally attacking Unathi but expressing the frustration that most of us go through when listening to the show due to her behaviour.

  • Dinga Mqulo - 2013-05-23 15:33

She must leave ASAP she thinks she knows everything but her general knowledge is so poor and she is so ignorant, everytime she starts talking I want to throw my radio in water,

      Jeany Ndum-Ndum Solomon - 2013-07-18 22:23

Lol oh yhini tsitsi menzani cc Unathi but she is rude to the listeners i must admit and believe me she's not the only Dj that's rude.

  • Melanie Banks - 2013-05-23 20:40

Well written letter with examples of incidents that occurred. Unathi is in the public and this letter was sent to 'the public platform'. Imo the letter meant meant no disrespect but was just observations on Unathis attitude and disregard for her listerners. The ppl attacking the writer clearly missed the part where she said she liked listening to metrofm. Ps why bring Gareth and other Djs/presenters into this story when clearly they not on Metro and were never mentioned in the post.

  • Goodwill Eudash Mbambo Zwana - 2013-05-23 22:00

Unathi is just as human as all of us and not perfect. This whole issue has been blown out of propotion. People are responding irratiionally and if she this was to be removed from the show then Metro might as well seize. It is only natural to point out the bad side of a person you hate and over look it when you love that person. All what this boils down to is hate. Unfortunately Unathi's backers are having difficulty supporting her just like when a mob attacks. Innocent people have been killed in MOB justice.

  • Khumbuzile Skhosana - 2013-05-23 22:53

Guys yehlisani umoya n gv hr another chance shz only human i'm sure she'll rectify hr mistakes n start working on hr attitude. Nawe Unathi hhayi maaaan awujameleki khuzikhuze maaaaan i wud'nt want to c u being replaced mara khuziphathe kuhle.

      Keromamang Faith Ntsheki - 2013-05-24 13:49

hahahahahaha @ "Nawe Unathi hhayi maan" after the nice speach abt giving her a chnage...girl u just made my day. hihihih

  • Amukelani Lindiwe Mashabana - 2013-05-24 09:03

    Unathi must go

  • Msizi-oscar Nzimande - 2013-05-24 18:53

Wow so many people ganging up on one person, it sounds like all of you are doing exactly what the person who wrote the letter is accusing Unathi of, which is bullying. Listen you IDIOTS if you dont like the show change the station, if you dont like Unathi's personality address it with her Privately (surely she has an email address, facebook etc) and finally if you wanted a photo with her and she snubbed U haaaddde-sorry shem uzoba strong she's an artist not the POPE ok dont her album ke. But the point is its unfair to attack someone for their personality while u r saying they must respect others personalities. And ive heard constructive criticism and i know an attack...this is an attack

      Florence Booi - 2013-05-27 15:52

Msizi you missing the point I love her trust me but she disrespects people publicly she embarrasses her team the same way and if we don't criticize her she's going to another radio station with the same attitude she deserves no privacy it takes one mistake to eliminate a thousands of customers of cause she won't be fired but the management must do something if they still want to hang on to Metro we are the listeners we happen to pay her salary there for she needs to respect that!

  • Nomcebo Dlamini - 2013-05-25 21:47

this lady writes so well, but I think she did exactly what she says she is not doing the 'bring her down syndrome'. this could have been a constructive critisism if she had forwarded the letter directly to Unathi or to the crew and I must say it is very easy to get sabc employees e-mail addresses. What she says might be true but because she had bottled her anger against her for years, she maliciously decided on an open letter.

  • Shirmy Mo - 2013-06-03 10:52

Hopefully Metro FM will heed the letter and do something (publically) with Unathi's behaviour on the show and she must publically apologies and promise to change else someone must fill her chair. if she can't deal with people, she shouldn't work with people. Loved The Letter.

  • Vuyisile Vuyane Vusumzi - 2013-09-21 04:33
