Nando's flames McIntosh Polela

Johannesburg - Fast food franchise Nando's is running an advertising campaign inspired by Hawks spokesperson McIntosh Polela's tweets, it was reported on Tuesday.

According to The Star, a Nando's poster advert read: "You shouldn't tweet when you're hungry, McIntosh."

"Next time you're thinking about tweeting, do yourself (and your followers) a favour and come to Nando's instead. Unlike your jokes, our flame-grilled Peri-Peri chicken is always tasteful."

Polela's tweets on Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye's murder conviction made headlines last Wednesday.

"I trust that JubJub's supporters gave him a jar of Vaseline to take to prison," Polela tweeted.

He later apologised on Twitter for the comment he had made. The paper reported that Polela took to the social networking site again after the Nando's advert and said: "And Nando's owes me money 4 using my name to advertise chicken."

The fast food outlet has featured other newsmakers in its advertising campaigns , including Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe and Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Last Dictator Standing

Last year the fast food franchise pulled its "Last Dictator Standing" TV commercial which had been aired in South Africa.

The advert showed Mugabe eating alone at Christmas, his empty table set for departed dictators, including Gaddafi.

To the soundtrack of "Those Were the Days", the commercial shows an actor playing Mugabe reminiscing about his times with former dictators. It portrays him and Gaddafi engaging in a water pistol fight, with Gaddafi wielding a golden AK47 rifle.

A Zimbabwean youth group loyal to Mugabe, called for a boycott of Nando's because of the advert.

  • magomarele - 2012-10-23 09:59

I like it, but me thinks they should've also made a moving picture or TV ad about it. I still like "the last dictator standing".

  • aspruyt - 2012-10-23 10:00

For once I thought that Mac's humour was better than Nando's attempt.

  • brian.connell.18 - 2012-10-23 10:01

I don't know which advertising house creates the Nando's advertisements, but they are singularly brilliant. Nando's chose wisely. Their courage is to be commended - they always come to the table (pardon the pun)with topical and contentious subjects. Go Nando's!!!!!

And maybe Mcintosh can give a suitable donation to a HIV clinic.

      lungelo.yili - 2012-10-23 11:24

but the reality of the situation is that most males fear prison because of rape. i can't take that away from McIntosh

I must admit, it's awesome citizenry from Nandos to be such a beacon for freedom of expression even though they have nothing to do with press and such. Would their ads be banned if the secrecy bill passes?

They love politics, how about bringing another one about Mangaung? The one they made about my favourite comrade Julius Malema was funny and i liked it because i knew My president wouldn't get mad about it as he is politically wise unlike spear protest by useless buti manamela and blade 'cry baby comrade' nzimande.

      hilary.mowatt2 - 2012-10-24 13:23
