Bloemfontein - The University of the Free State (UFS) confirmed on Thursday that world famous talk show queen Oprah Winfrey will be visiting the Kovsie campus on June 24.
According to Die Burger, Winfrey will receive an honorary doctorate in education from the UFS.
UFS spokesperson Lacea Loader declined to elaborate about the visit.
"I can only confirm that she will visit the campus and she will receive an honorary degree. We will announce more details at a later stage."
The news of her visit to Bloemfontein came to light on Thursday when UFS rector Professor Jansen announced it on Twitter.
"You heard it here first (...) On June 24 Oprah Winfrey lands on the campus of the University of the Free State," he tweeted.
Excited
Loader said there will be strict security and protocol and will be followed. The arrangements will be announced shortly.
Winfrey's name will now be added with other well-known celebrities to the list of UFS honorary degrees. Former President Nelson Mandela received an honorary doctorate in law from the UFS in 2001.
Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu received an honorary doctorate in theology in January this year.
According to Loader everyone at the UFS are very excited about Winfrey's arrival.
"It's very good for the university," she said excitedly.
