Racist language not in my nature - model

2012-05-05 14:22
Johannesburg - Model Jessica Leandra on Saturday said it was not in her nature to use racist language, after she caused a row on social networking site Twitter.

"Over the past 24 hours I have had time to reflect back on my actions and I don't have the words to express my sincere remorse following my unkindly and emotional outburst on Twitter recently," Leandra said in a statement.

"The people that do know me, know that this is not my nature and verbal usage."

Leandra came under fire on Friday after posting a racist tweet.

On Thursday evening, she told her Twitter followers: "Just, well took on an arrogant and disrespectful kaffir inside Spar. Should have punched him, should have [sic]."

Leandra, who was men's magazine FHM model of the year in 2011, has since deleted the post.

"No matter how much I was provoked, I do acknowledge that it was an inappropriate reaction to the incident. I have had time to reflect back on the incident and realise that I could have handled this differently," she said.

Leandra said she had decided to get professional coaching to help her deal with instances of sexual harassment.

"I am still very young and if I can learn how to handle this more appropriately, perhaps other young ladies and women in general can also benefit and learn from my experience."

South Africans took to Twitter on Friday to voice their distaste at Leandra's comment.

In a statement on its website FHM said Leandra had been stripped of her title as winner of the FHM Modelbook 2011 competition with immediate effect.

"It’s important to us that it is noted that she in no way represents the magazine; she was merely the winner of an online poll we ran, and that we totally distance ourselves from her blatantly racist comments," FHM editor Brendan Cooper said in the statement.

"We have removed all pictures of her from our website and will have nothing to do with her in future."

QuickTrim SA, one of her sponsors, tweeted: "Due to the severity of the remarks by #JessicaLeandra #QuickTrimSA herewith ends our sponsorship to her with immediate effect!"

Columnist Mabine Seabe wrote on the social networking site that he had lodged a complaint with the SA Human Rights Commission.

Its not about people who know u but the general public whose eyes u are in, get a better publicist to do your public statements

      Gieljam - 2012-05-06 11:58

Kolobe ,Whats this black thinking and trying to offend SA whites by attacking their parents or ancestors ? I know of a number of people of all colour and nationality that have come to SA lately(not born here) pro "black" only to change their views radically once they have had a first hand experience of the situation here ..

  • Grant - 2012-05-05 14:36

"The people that do know me, know that this is not my nature and verbal usage."- Yeah, yeah.............. And some months ago it was abusing petrol attendants!!!! Methinks a pattern is developing!!!???

  • elvis.sibuyi - 2012-05-05 14:38

An angrier person's reaction always reflect da real inner personality of hs being..so stop pretending...thats how u wr taught whl stl young....bt remember name calling doesnt make u a better person than at othr at all...move on leandra plz...

  • CharlesDumbwin - 2012-05-05 14:39

These ditsy models must think twice before they drop K words out of their mouth that they can never take back...

  • Jacques - 2012-05-05 14:39

*\Perhaps other young ladies and women\, you probably meant. Editor was too busy deleting comments to sort out the grammar. Anyway- this airhead will never work in SA as a model again, I'm afraid.

  • Lacrimose - 2012-05-05 14:45

These narcissistic, self-absorbed types never learn. When you have made a monumental mistake, the worst thing you can do is keep yourself in the spotlight. It will just open you up to more ridicule. Time to learn about self-control and how to deal with stressful situations in a mature and responsible way.

  • Nockx - 2012-05-05 14:54

Whom are you lying to? Not me that's for sure

  • Zeke - 2012-05-05 15:03

'mlungu is not a racial slur!!! It's a Zulu word for a white person just like umto myama ( black person) is used by black people to say that he/she is black! Yes there are venacular derogative terms but mlungu is not one of them! Here's to more of us learning more of our South African languages instead of just assuming!

      Irene - 2012-05-05 16:47

If that's the case, what word should English people use for black people?

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-05 17:10

@ Irene, It does NOT mean non-believers here in RSA,

      Sagebrush - 2012-05-06 03:23

      @Tama What does it mean

      Zeke - 2012-05-06 06:00

haven't we always used the term 'black' people and in my experience it has never offended me at all because it carries no racial negativity. There is no racial 'heavy' history behind it unlike the K word. No one including black people have the right to use that word and I wish that people would stop painting black people under the same brush. There are some of us who really care about our country and are really saddened by the state it's in. The problem is that there aren't too many of us who care enough or fully grasp horrendous mess we find ourselves in, to do something about it. Instead some of us sit on News 24 lambasting our country leaders and what the citizens of this country are like. Perhaps it's time to have a look at what we are doing personally in our community, how are we helping it? What are we doing (complaining isn't considered helping) to change things, action wise. I may not be wise enough to understand certain issues but I know when something is wrong and my moral compass tells me that something needs to be done! And as long as my moral compass is working I will do my best from wherever I am to better the situation regardless of race, class or gender!

      Mfundi - 2012-05-07 08:45

If that's the case, what word should English people use for black people? @Irene- You are a complete brick!!!

      sabongam - 2012-05-07 09:10

@ Irene - did you think before you asked this retarded question? Its like saying what should English people call,Portuguese people? Ummmhh, Portuguese people...Black people are called black people and that's what English people should call them you dimwit.

  • Dennis - 2012-05-05 15:07

"Racist language not in my nature - model" It must be cause .....oooops you slipped up real bad itch with a B !!

      Warren - 2012-05-05 15:24

@ Deeteem: Now there's a mature comment on an article about a derogatory term. Btw, did you come up with the "itch with a B" all by yourself?

  • Nicholas - 2012-05-05 15:07

It's one thing to let it slip in the heat of the moment, but getting online and putting it down in writing? There are plenty of other non-racial derogatory insults she could have used - hopefully she'll just fade into obscurity and we won't be seeing any more of her in the news after this weekend.

  • annelize.oosthuizen.5 - 2012-05-05 15:21

  • fred.ryder - 2012-05-05 15:23

I think we've all lost track of the sight that she was provoked. She got sexually harassed for goodness sake. She's probably been harassed by many people and bound to explode eventually. To hate is human. She is only a human is she not?? I agree there should be slight repercussions, but why all the outburst by the 'hypocritical' black population.

      moshe.mane - 2012-05-05 15:38

You should have seen outburst made by black population on Malema's dubul' ibunu song. Some of us even took it to as far as the ANC to have some struggle songs amended. If you follow current affairs you would know what the ANC chairperson said about it being inevitable that the songs will be rephrased.Even president Zuma reiterated that.Suddenly when we talk about Jessica we are Hypocrites.I don't like Malema ideology and will always loath racism.Fred maybe you should wear our shoes and walk in our footsteps from say 1960 and you will understand better.

      Themba - 2012-05-05 16:06

Everyone gets angry from time to time mister. However, everyone does not sprout racism from time to time and take it to a public platform without repercussions. Get that in your obviously thick skull, hypocrite!

      katlego.job - 2012-05-05 16:06

this jessica of yours,Mr Fred,is a good example of what your saying is called a 'hypocrite'. She couldnt pretend long enough to hide what she really feel about a black person(*HATE*)

      grabe1 - 2012-05-05 16:20

I still think she is super sexy!! Her boyfriend should have sorted the person out who bothered her! Face your problems, don't facebook or twitter them!

      Themba - 2012-05-05 19:15

James, what a sad, pathetic little man you must be in real life. I wish I could descend in the gutter with you. But you will surely beat me with experience. Besides, I have learnt not to roll in the mud with a pig, because you being a racist pig will enjoy it, while I will just be covered with racist slime. Enjoy wallowing in self pity sad little man. One last thing: apartheid is dead and buried, and no amount of frothing at the mouth on news24 will bring back. You can hang your hat on that

      Leanne - 2012-05-05 21:27

@ fred since you are so good at making excuses for her please then justify what pushed her to tweet racist comments about a petrol attendant? According to you she was sexualy harassed and had right to utter the rubbish that she uttered

  • Bheki Nas - 2012-05-05 15:27

No need to justify ya self ex..''Suppermodel''

  • FinalJustice - 2012-05-05 15:31

Absolutely no justification for Me. Leandra's behaviour, period. The degree of racial double standards in this country is what astonish me: It took months and months of deliberation in a court of law and thousands upon thousands of Rands later in lawyer's fees to acknowledge that 'Kill the Boer' actually needs to be regarded as hate speech (like anyone needs a doctoral degree to figure that out). Yet if you want a crash course on 'How to flush your career in 24hours flat' jus' ask Jess ...

      Brett - 2012-05-05 15:46

The court ruled that people cannot sing that song yet they still sing it and the government has appealed the courts decision. The government is fightng for the \right\ to sing it...

      Ted - 2012-05-05 15:53

FinalJustice\\Fred\\Annelize, where is Malema today? His shenanigans all added up to where we all know he ended. The model is gone too. There was a better way to get rid of Julius. These chaps were not acting stupid for nothing. When he thought he was on an all-out attack, they got him on the counter-attack and he was finished. They just didn't want to fire him for the song coz he could easily get sympathy from a historical perspective. Most of the people who sympathize with this girl simply don't see why its wrong mostly coz of history. Even in America today, a white person saying a 'negro' has not the same fate as one saying a 'black man' Be safe, don't just K-word around. I think if a critical mass of black people heard her say the K-word she could not have lived to tweet! Or she would generally be worse off. There are historical bad words for white people; bad words for sure. Some you don't even know coz generally, blacks forgive easily and try to quickly forget. This ubuntu issue runs as deep as our hatred for the K-word. There are even derogatory words that tribes here use for others, but it is taboo to say them. How would you expect a pat on the back for a word everyone hates. When we say let's forgive and forget, surely we never want to be reminded. We start to remember isn't it? The K word is a reminder

      SamCarGon - 2012-05-05 21:19

also, people need to wake UP! She made a SECOND racist comment on Friday morning about an Engen Petrol Attendant, which was deleted when the world found out about the racist slur from Thursday night! So this is not some poor little girl who made a mistake, you don't make it twice!

  • Ashleigh - 2012-05-05 15:58

Everybody at some point has made a racial slur. You are all hypocrites. She just did it on a public stage, very unfortunate. You will also all probably say you christiaans, then its time to practice what you preach and forgive her for her sins..

      Leandra - 2012-05-05 16:14

I agree Ashleig, during the time I worked with her she never and I mean never said a bad word to or about anyone, liked she said she is still young and unfortunately made a poor judgment call and had to grow up very fast in the last couple of days. We all make mistakes at some point in our lives and we learn from it. And before anyone says anything bad about her again, go look in the mirror and reflect on your life and your mistakes before you judge. She like everyone else deserves a second chance in life, I'm sure she learned a hard lesson from all of this and I wish her all the best

      Warren - 2012-05-05 16:19

@ Ian: Do you feel better now? (Btw, how old are you?)

      Leandra - 2012-05-05 16:26

@Warren, judging from his comments I would say about 2 or perhaps 3yrs at the most, cause that's the mentallity I'm picking up lol!

      Shirley - 2012-05-05 16:30

Ashleigh: You are wasting your breath! I tried to explain that several times a few comments up,to no avail! This is just being turned into a free for all!

      Ashleigh - 2012-05-05 16:48

@Ian rape and racism are two completely different things. You cant classify them in the same sentence.. Can you honestly say that you have never ever said one racist comment .. I highly doubt that.

      Ian - 2012-05-05 17:27

Ashleigh, Chris Hani and all other black people have been- KILLED because of racism. So it is the same. As for uttering racist word, I can tell u I have not otherwise I would have had relationship with a woman of different race.

      hanjo.overes - 2012-05-07 09:36

Leandra, I'm also young, but that doesn't give me the right to racially insult people on a public forum...stop making excuses...she knew exactly what she was doing..

      hanjo.overes - 2012-05-07 09:44

also, this came out at the end of last week, can you realistically expect people to be over it by the Monday?

  • Cameron - 2012-05-05 16:03

  • Henry - 2012-05-05 16:12

I just love the way so many people jump on the bandwagon and defend poor behaviour by bringing in irellevant issues to the discussion. I agree with you sean.looney and quite simply my personal point of veiw on this issue is this was racist/hate speech because it was done long after the fact and therefore was not an impulsive spur of the moment reaction ! The K-word is unaceptable in this country and everyone knows that, so this poppie is totally dof !! My 18 year old son plays in a Vodacom Soccer team and is almost always the only white person in the stadiums - he is called Verwoerd and malungu and other interesting nicknames by the crowd at every game but knows that it's all part of life in SA and takes it in good spirit and wins them over by reacting good naturedly to the banter !! The vast majority of Black South Africans are just as horrified about the crime in our country as the whites are, but for goodness sake get with the programme rather than inciting more hate and disrespect by saying stupid things !!

      Thamsanqa - 2012-05-05 16:22

Sometimes reading the comments on stories on News24 makes me sad. It makes me sad to see the calibre of some people we have in our country! This isn't a matter of blacks vs white;s rather it is a matter of a nation that will not stand for any sort of racism. We have come too far as a country to allow this to happen. South Africa's contempt towards this issue is fully justified and this half-assed apology that was prepared by some publicist does not fool me.

      tumiblake - 2012-05-05 17:11

I agree its not about blacks vs whites, its about being against racism. Truth be told she meant what she said. From wherever she were up until she tweet she carried within herself, wasnt that long enough to let go of it? She decided to let people know what she thinks. Trust if she is young as she says she wouldnt use the K word. One may think she is being told that black people are K* ~2s at home. Lets stand together against racism regardless of whose the victim or the perpetrator.

FHM: "It’s important to us that it is noted that she in no way represents the magazine; she was merely the winner of an online poll we ran, and that we totally distance ourselves from her blatantly racist comments," FHM editor Brendan Cooper said in the statement. "We have removed all pictures of her from our website and will have nothing to do with her in future." Whilst I do not have anything good to say about the models utterances I must say that Brendon Cooper sounds like a true wimp thats going totally overboard to ensure his pathetic little Mag (and his ego) doesn't suffer. Dear Brendon this girl DID represent your magazine, this girl was the WINNER of a poll YOU RAN and I'm sure she was published in your Mag in various pages (I don't read the rubbish). So ye distance yourself and say you don't agree - but don't go on like a wimp getting a heart attack because you show yourself as an irritating little twoface. I state again that I do not agree or condone what the lady said for those that might want to put me on that side.

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-05 16:53

You take a swipe at Brendon Cooper for ""Doing the right thing"" An organization distancing itself from a racist in the 21st Century is clearly the only way to go, Surely?

      louis.langenhoven - 2012-05-05 18:20

@Tamaranui: I can go into a paroxysm of vitriol and give you 2 pages worth of my mind in response (somewhat like dear Brendon) but all I'm going to say is: read what I said.

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-05 18:39

I have read your comment and just to make sure you are aware of what exactly you did post, here's your quote; """I must say that Brendon Cooper sounds like a true wimp thats going totally overboard to ensure his pathetic little Mag (and his ego) doesn't suffer.""" Hence I reiterate my question regarding your personal attack on Coops??

      johncarlos.biza - 2012-05-05 17:22

I feel the same way. I'd rather have her admit she's racist than the condescending excuses. She even called a petrol attendant an 'African animal' and retweeted her follower's message to her with the K word in it.

  • Ian - 2012-05-05 16:42

What did the black guy say to her? He probably said something not sexual harassment and she got offended for getting attention from a black guy. If he touch her, the guy would be in jail by now. If it was that severe that it warranted racist remarks, why did she report it to appropriate authorities. And she took time to tweet about after actually said k- word. Now you talk about remorse. It is people like these put our country backwards.

      Warren - 2012-05-05 17:59

After I got robbed of R3000 I went to the (Welkom) cops for help as I knew where the guy stayed. The cops laughed at me & asked me what exactly I wanted them to do about it. About 6 months after that R8000 was stolen from me in an armed robbery, I didn't even bother to report that to cops. After all, I was just wasting their time.

Sorry about your pool, however going through your comments on this article you need to look into a mirror & ask yourself some serious questions. (Calling for people to be murdered?) @ HughMasakela: Hopefully, after reading my reply to young Themba, I won't have to explain to you again that the emphasis of my comment was about how you will waste your time reporting a crime to the police & NOT about criminals or crime in general. Warren - 2012-05-08 14:00

@ Themba & Hugh MasIkela: Why did you delete your replies to my comment? Unless News 24 removed them for you, in which case News 24, why did you remove their comments?

  • pkheswa - 2012-05-05 16:43

      Hugo - 2012-05-05 18:42

hehehe SamCargon you seem a bit defensive, are we getting any tweets from you in the future?

      SamCarGon - 2012-05-05 21:20

sure Hugo, what would you like me to tweet about? the weather? what I had for lunch? the shocking state our country is in and how it is being dragged into the toilet? you pick

  • Gareth - 2012-05-05 16:51

This has gotten so far overboard. Yes, she's an idiot and a racist, but for people to still be carrying on like this is ridiculous. I've had many racial slurs against me too, I just call the guy an idiot and move on. What she did was stupid as hell, but she's not that important that it warrants such attention.

      Irene - 2012-05-05 17:29

And that Gareth is because you don't have a chip on your shoulder and why no white person ever reports black racism towards them. Whites are big enough not to allow black racists to define who they are.

      Themba - 2012-05-05 17:43

Gareth in fact she's the one that's carrying on, trying to spin us a yarn. We are only responding to her gaaning aan trying to pull wool over our eyes. Irene, Solidairy has been challenging perceived black racism successfully for quite a while. Please read and familiarise yourself with the news and get out of the cocoon in which you live

      Thamsanqa - 2012-05-05 18:17

Don't even try to normalize racism just because it happens doesn't mean it should.

  • Sidney Gilroy - 2012-05-05 16:53

We as South Africans are HYPER sensitive about race. The words black, indian and white is frowned upon in Europe. My issue is - she used a DEROGATIVE term to signify the race of a person in the context of alleged sexual harassment. And that is gross generalization. Which shows that she might be pretty...but she surely ain't clever...and actually narrow-minded. By stooping to that level - she is no better than the guy who perved over her.

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-05 17:05

Unfortunately she is worse, Men perving at these model individuals on a catwalk or skimpily clad swimsuit shoot ...comeon give us a break. There is NO excuse and the long walk off a short plank awaits.

      Riaan - 2012-05-05 17:30

      Tamaranus I beg to differ.

      Irene - 2012-05-05 17:31

Shame Vinesh aka Bluzulu, did you need to change your identity? Pity the chip on your shoulder hasn't changed.

  • Clayton J D Andrews - 2012-05-05 16:57

well its not like she tweeted immediately after the incident in anger. she had time to calm down. go home an then tweet that disgusting remark.

      Carl - 2012-05-05 17:43

That's the point exactly, even if it was there, she took her phone out and went to twitter and wrote. That's deep, if she just said it there (not justifies too) I would have at least said she was remorseful. But, well, I really hope I'm wrong about this.

  • joel.masola - 2012-05-05 17:00

Haha u wish u could have punched him but fact is u couldnt s i m sure he wasnt afraid of u ,n all u had to do was take ur frustration out on twitter but unfortunately ur frustration costed u some sponsors ag shame

      Riaan - 2012-05-05 17:55

Aren't you a big boy. Not even scared of women.

      ossewa - 2012-05-06 07:14

@Joel - We heard you the first time you posted your worthless vomit, or don't you know how to use a computer? Or am I being a racist for asking?

  • kasper.mbayi2 - 2012-05-05 17:05

This young lady shows the world what she have inside her heart. There's no remorse at all she delivered what she had.

  • Erkie69 - 2012-05-05 17:25

Im not condoning her remark (the silly model) and it was wrong of her but seriously, what model has brains? but really, we as south africans need to stop pointing fingers, looking to point out mistakes others make and just get over this s***. if somebody wants to be stupid enough to drop a k bomb let them look like backward fools. live, love, forgive and forget. move on and just be chilled

  • SM1012 - 2012-05-05 17:33

Wow!!!...the K-Word is no no in Mzanzi..she should have just tried to use F word...nee man, sy is 'n goeie SA meisie kind with a real character of Racism.

  • grant.henry1 - 2012-05-05 17:34

What the hell is all this uproar about. Has no one noticed the women is blonde.

      Themba - 2012-05-05 17:45

      Jacky - 2012-05-05 18:17

And you are a rude chauvanist as well. Geez get some manners

  • Themba - 2012-05-05 17:46

No Jessica, being a racist and using racist language is in your nature. You just don't know it and I am here to inform you. Now wear your racist badge with pride and stop apologising because you are fooling no one.

      Hamish Evert - 2012-05-05 18:34

@Temba, I agree, she is wearing her racist badge, the only difference between u and her is she outed herself and showed everybody her badge, yours is still hidden.

      Themba - 2012-05-05 19:21

Hamish, and I guess you are a sangoma and that's what your bones told you about me? ROFLOL

      Stoffel Hessell - 2012-05-05 23:49

Themba I find it very strange that you don't mention anything about the remarks that the black gentleman made towards the lady?? Is it because of a culture thing? Is it because it is acceptable for black men to treat women like that? Is it because the rest of African men, including our president, have no respect for women? Or is it because they don't have respect for any form of life including rhinos, guerillas and fellow human beings? I'm just curious and definitely not racist but I'm trying to explain to my children why Africa is in such a mess but Africa with it's child soldiers, raping women, greed, no respect for life makes it very difficult for me..

      nonku.butelezi - 2012-05-06 07:38

Stoffel, the \gentleman\ was wrong, that we can't deny. This has nothing to do with race

      Themba - 2012-05-06 13:15

Stoffel, that pervert did was wrong and should be condemned. But remember as well he allegedly sexually harassed Jessica. He did not act in a racist manner towards her to warrant her disgusting reaction. And no, it's not a culture thing. You are sadly ill-informed in this regard.

  • Jeremiah - 2012-05-05 17:54

I honestly think she was so stupid, she should have been professional,. thats one word you dont use on public platform. I really dont think she knew what it gona come to. Its not what she want to say, stupid remarks indeed.

  • Pedrosa - 2012-05-05 17:57

Recently our country celebrated freedom day as a democratic south africa, but to hear remarks of this nature,it really leaves much to be desired, now the model is trying to do damage control, the damage is irrepairable, and its well said, being remorseful here, doesn't come from within, its a complete lip-service,you are a racist to the core, infact what you have said, define your personality, you are a real beauty without the brain.

  • FinalJustice - 2012-05-05 19:28

@JessicaLeandra Twitter stats: In the initial article it was reported that JL tweeted to about 2,500 followers. When I checked out her profile Sat.morning early, she had about 5,000 followers, latest count about 5min. ago 6,000 ... What am I saying? Nothing.

      Themba - 2012-05-05 19:36

In fact you are saying that 6000 now know what a dumb little racist she is. In addition, SA and the world also now know the same fact. Add that that fact that her racist behind is now unemployable.

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-05 19:45

Twitter followers don't pay the bills,

      James - 2012-05-05 19:46

Hey Themba I don't know you from Adam however with your Racial track record I would hesitate to use the word "Dumb" Attract too much attention to you.

      Themba - 2012-05-05 20:06

James, shut your trap. It's you that have been spitting racist statistics from the "CIA", "readers digest" and other garbage obviously written by other racists to feed your racist appetite. You cannot even punctuate. No wonder you are still in SA stealing oxygen when your likes have left to pollute peaceful race relations in other countries.

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-05 20:06

James, The Detractors don't have a foot to stand on regarding the continuous rhetoric regarding our history and why we find ourselves in this social setup. Many have lost what they had (some never deserved anyway) and are angry with the rest of RSA to their predicament nevertheless it's akin to justifying Hitler's infamous deeds.Posters such as yourself and several others are just creating more friction via the blatantly bias posts. Utilize Queen Marion as a role model and move on,

  • Patricia - 2012-05-05 19:34
