SABC refuses to show new Nando's ad

2012-06-04 08:31
Cape Town - The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has refused to flight fast food franchise Nando's latest advertisement, which questions xenophobia, because it apparently contravenes regulations, it was reported on Monday.

The Cape Times reported that the public broadcaster was meant to flight the advert on Thursday night but plugged it because of its "xenophobic undertone".

The SABC told Nando's that the advert violated the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act and the Advertising Standards Authority Act.

The video begins with a few people jumping over a fence at the South African border, followed by a voice-over which says: "You know what's wrong with South Africa? It's all you foreigners."

It then shows locals of different races and cultures disappearing in puffs of smoke.

According to the report, it also shows immigrants such as Chinese, Nigerians, Indians and Europeans vanish.

The only person left, a Khoisan, says: "I'm not going anywhere. You @&*$# [swear word blocked out in advert] found us here."

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago told the newspaper the advert would incite attacks on foreigners.

"Nando's may say that it is trying to promote diversity but what we are concerned about is that the public might interpret it differently."

Watch the Nando's advert here.

  • Sagren - 2012-06-04 08:45

how long before someone says that the advert is pornographic or racist....IT CAN HAPPEN!!!

      Jacqui - 2012-06-04 12:22

Sagren, can't be pornography, no testicals anywhere.

      jeremy002 - 2012-06-04 12:42

Xenophobia is seen by many as a form of racism. Racism is not always about skin colour.

      Peter - 2012-06-04 13:17

@ Jeremy002---- there are breasts though

      gungets.tuft - 2012-06-05 09:55

Jacqui - where do you think the chicken nuggets come from??

  • Sara - 2012-06-04 08:46

Wow just goes to show the primitive minds leading the sabc.shame that the truth really does hurt!

      Jean - 2012-06-04 10:08

true true. Same with Nando's dictator advert... Was brilliant but once again people are so touchy...

      nigel.burgess.52 - 2012-06-04 10:36

      Scared of the truth. Why?????????

      Jacqui - 2012-06-04 12:23

Sara, the truth did hurt, they thought they were here before the Khoi San.

      Thabang - 2012-06-05 16:20

@Sara, Oops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DSTV, etv, and Mnet also banned the ad. Cant wait to hear your change of tune. Does that make these stations primitive also? Or will you say wise man changes his mind?

  • goed.beter.bester - 2012-06-04 08:47

Grow up SABC... Violent people will commit violence irrespective of what they see on tv! Blame the ANC's botching the education system for xenophobia, not a funny advert!

  • paulgerber969 - 2012-06-04 08:52

Where is the FREEDOM OF speech.yes we have too many ILLEGAL foreigners in South Africa

  • my10cent - 2012-06-04 08:52

    Brilliant add!!!

  • Tim - 2012-06-04 09:00

How could it possibly incite attacks on foreigners when the message clearly reminds us that with the exception of the San people we are ALL foreigners here. And that being the case we need to accept and tolerate all that live here (legally)

      MissXhosa Xhosa - 2014-09-05 09:21

As someone of Welsh ancestry, this is perplexing. Why are the Irish to be set aside from the other nationalities of the British isles? That doesn't make much sense. Look, the Welsh, Scots, and Irish are all CELTIC, and the English/Anglos are actually of Germanic origin. So really, if any ethnic should be excluded from the rest of them in the British isles, it is the English, not the Irish. And what about Northern Irish? Should they be cut off from the rest of their people because of some modern borders? I'm not talking in terms of legal citizenship and modern borders/definition. I am talking ethnicity and culture. And in this sense, the Irish ARE British. If they are not British in this sense, then the same can easily be argued for the Welsh and Scotish. Which would relegate the term British to being a synonym for English(which, I sometimes suspect is what the English want ;) ). Subject: Re: Why a lack of British identity in America? Written By: Full_House_Fan on 03/12/05 at 2:24 am KhoiSan blood is in us. My ancestors the KhoiSan and Xhosa, this is our land. We came to this country about the time the English took land from the Irish and made their home, England. So are the English foreign to England? Do you regard them as such? As England is their home so South Africa is our home. KhoiSan live through us. Their blood runs in our veins...

  • Lita - 2012-06-04 09:13

The sabc has gone abit too far I found the ad funny!!

      John - 2012-06-04 12:24

      So did I!

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-06-05 14:50

The SABC is an arm or a voice of the ANC. The same as it used to be part of the Nat government. Never listen to it and seldom watch it anymore. It's as boooring as hell....VERY one-sided, never heard of Freedom of Speech.

  • Jackie - 2012-06-04 09:17

One of the best ads I've seen in a long time. South Africans need to get the broom sticks out of their a$$es and try and find some kind of sense of humour!

  • Andres - 2012-06-04 09:18

The comments are worrisome. Firstly, that we actually have no clue about our history, that SA has, if you go far enough into the past, always be a country of newcomers seeking a better life and that we have ZERO tolerance for one another. This is something the Nandos ad rightfully attacks. Narrow-minded South Africans' intolerance of others not-like-them. Indigenous, settler etc. That type of rhetoric flagrantly displays the intolerance and that ideals of Mandela have been abandoned in favour of racially-charged rhetoric of late. SABC was wrong and frankly cowards and censured themselves by not flighting the commercial, calling their so-called 'independence' into question.

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-06-05 14:51

Well said, annman! And frighteningly true.

      Thabang - 2012-06-05 16:26

@annman, considering the latest developments that Mnet, DSTV and etv banned the ad, let me help you with your new comment. SABC, Mnet, etv and Mnet, was wrong and frankly cowards and censured themselves by not flighting the commercial, calling their so-called 'independence' into question.

  • Remi - 2012-06-04 09:24

Perhaps its a good thing considering that our society doesn't even have the emotional capacity to handle a painting. Just imagine the palava that will surface if the masses had to see this ad. I personally like it though. Good on you Nandos.

  • Ryno - 2012-06-04 09:31

    tongue-in-the-cheeck add - but brilliant

  • dabiggsta - 2012-06-04 09:33

I'm not gonna lie. Really SABC get the F@#$ over yourselves man. I'm a black man who actually loved the AD due to the fact that it does tell the truth. SABC grow the F@#$ up and getta life. Or better yet LEARN YOUR HISTORY. Honestly that is the best AD ever made and i pay respects to it.

      Nigel - 2012-06-04 17:04

      ewe Dabiggsta, well said brother

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-06-05 14:52

And well said to you, too, dabiggsta.

      Thabang - 2012-06-05 16:28

You are now free to swear to all broadcasters since they all banned the ad.

  • georgebrightons - 2012-06-04 09:38

Good move! Let's unite and stay together in peace and harmony!

  • aspruyt - 2012-06-04 09:46

SABC - you block one of the few things worth watching on your USELESS channels. The truth hurts your feelings?

  • Nokuthula - 2012-06-04 09:49

Gosh what happened to a sense of humor. It's just a brilliant adv why do we have to bring race, politics etc into everything..

      nickkirsten - 2012-06-04 11:10

Exactly my point - it was surely the best add I've ever seen anyone has tried over decades of television

  • niven.spence - 2012-06-04 09:54

This is absolutely ridiculous! the ad is brilliant and depicts nothing but the truth. How can it be reasoned that it might be interpreted incorrectly? That in itself is an insult! The attempt to bridle creativity that creates genuine dialogue and make people consider their erroneous ways with a comedic twist is just lame honestly. The extraneous few who finds this to be offensive, deluded themselves to believe it is. The diatribe launched against freedom of artistic and creative expression is cowardly and those with a vested interest in diverting from dealing with very real issues in society are propagating this gospel of censorship!

  • Thozi - 2012-06-04 09:59

I simply just love Nandos ads - all of them. Whoever is the brain behind their conception, is provocatively brilliant.

  • mastersvoice - 2012-06-04 10:02

I think the should also ban McGuyver - because its a white guy doing clever things. That's just racist, because it implies black guys cannot do clever things...

      nigel.burgess.52 - 2012-06-04 10:42

Yes that is about how crazy it has become. Talk about a world gone mad.

      Jacqui - 2012-06-04 12:32

Last week it was a painting, today it is an advert. . Yesterday we weren't allowed to know Winnie Madikizela Mandela broke her wrist in a fall. I wodner how long till the lights reallly go out here.

      Duran - 2012-06-05 13:41

ALso the cookie monster as it portrays blue ppl in a bad light

  • Jacques - 2012-06-04 10:08

The Orwellian references in modern SA politics are uncanny. \The ads will be interpreted incorrectly\. Them telling us what we will think? Goverment making judgements on our cognitive abilities? Can you say 'thought police'?

  • ludlowdj - 2012-06-04 10:09

shut the SABC down for good, like their ANC masters they have a perfect 18 year failure rate.

  • Raymond Mather - 2012-06-04 10:37

Sabc and the ANC should just all disappear in a puff of smoke too , south Africa would be a better country , without Them !!!!!!

  • Stephen - 2012-06-04 10:57

Makes me wanna buy some Nando's and watch random puffs of smoke appear and the overcrowded streets clear as I eat it.

  • nickkirsten - 2012-06-04 11:09

      Jacqui - 2012-06-04 12:34

Nick, Freedom of speech means you are allowed to threaten whites and promise them hell on the horizon. No more, no less.

  • Dani - 2012-06-04 11:16

the truth of the matter is that great civilizations are always built by foreigners. settlement geography will teach us that when a group of foreigners settle in a foreign land, they are more organized than the local. the locals are usually to comfortable to realise the hard work that needs to be done

      rebecca.robyn - 2012-06-04 14:07

Ruined as matter whether you wanted civilization or not, we WILL bring it to you...after all, who were my forefathers to tell you you, oh foreighner you cannot do as you please? As it was then, we are being thought what to think...much like the SABC now! Just play the damn ad, most haven't given it that much thought till SABC started with the rants and raves-and started telling people what to feel. The ad is funny...finish en klaar!

      Dani - 2012-06-04 15:42

but in this day & age, settlers activity in this day & age still has to be monitored

  • nickkirsten - 2012-06-04 11:16

Further more - if SABC refuses to show the add - just watch it on Youtube :P

  • Thomas - 2012-06-04 11:54

Hey SABC, thanks for not showing the ad, at least with this public outburst you have drawn enough attention to give me the opportunity to view it on-line as well, SABC is not worth watching and I don't watch enough DSTV and haven't seen the ad before. BTW great ad Nando's you just know how to draw attention.

      Nigel - 2012-06-04 17:02

they got more airtime, than if the ANC media station (SABC) had just ignored it, thanks SABC for doing your part in making sure the truth is heard, lol idiots.

      John - 2012-06-05 03:03

Yep and i live overseas, thanks ANCBC for drawing attention to the add now i can also see it...on YouTube. LMFAO Brilliant add!

  • sidney.gilroy - 2012-06-04 12:00

  • Pacific - 2012-06-04 12:19

But its ok to air shoot the boer??? People wont interpret that wrongly???

  • Jacqui - 2012-06-04 12:20

SABC can't think, don't understand the ad and thus it is banned. Who expected anything else?.

  • keith.f.murphy - 2012-06-04 14:03

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-06-05 15:04

I believe, Mr Murphy, that the San were the first KNOWN race in S. Africa but I'm pretty sure that there were 'The People Before the San'. I think some very old graves have been found on the West Coast. I would LOVE to know more about that, can anyone tell me where to look - apart from Google.

  • William - 2012-06-04 14:25

I'm waiting on the African National Criminals and their broadcast service to call on their idiotic supporters to boycott Nando's.

      anette.smith.16 - 2012-06-04 15:56

They are not Nando's eaters. KFC is their brand of choice.

  • johan.pieters - 2012-06-04 14:35

@Malavi10 - Ignorance (or witlessness) is a state of being uninformed (lack of knowledge). The word ignorant is an adjective describing a person in the state of being unaware.

  • sean.noble1 - 2012-06-04 16:05

Yeah its brillaint, and its true, time for people to bloody well get over themselves. So the SABC says its viewers are too stupid to realize everyone except the Khoisan are foreigners to this land? No wonder nobody with half a brain doesnt watch SABC anymore.

  • renay.paulse1 - 2012-06-04 16:25

Awesome advert! Nandos never disappoints :) SABC's humor as always is stuck up their a*ses!

  • Chumscrubber1 - 2012-06-04 20:06

Yet they won't ban showing footage of black people singing "songs" calling for the killing of white people. Hmmm, very honest priorities - puppets of the regime. Disgusting.

  • Siphiwe - 2012-06-04 20:33

  • Charnelle - 2012-06-04 21:32

    Brilliant ADD! Absolutely brilliant!

  • George - 2012-06-04 21:51

Love the ad, love the way we it brings us all together, with truth. Lets all say i am proud to be black lets all say i am proud to be coloured lets all say i am proud to be Indian or gay or Zimbabwean, or Xhosa Or Zulu But more importantly Lets be proud to say "Ï am a South African" And therefore let me say, without guilt, or judgement I thank God..."Ï am white!"

      Sagin - 2012-06-05 15:23

George for a few years in the early nineties I was proud to be a south african, then i slowly realized the proponents of apartheid were infact trying to protect this country from the ,now visible concequences, of black rule. at the risk of pissing people off, i must honestly say that i am no longer patriotic or proud to be a part of this diseased tip of africa. There is no recovery.

  • Rupert - 2012-06-04 21:54

what percentage of the south african population are the khoisans , if all of us leave then who will buy the nandos chicken since the khoisans live in the wild and are hunters and gatherers .

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-06-05 15:10

I would imagine a very small percentage are left, rupert.magande, since they were decimated by the black tribes coming down from the north, whilst white people were coming up fron the south and hunting them for sport. It's a miracle there are any Khoisan left at all.

  • franklyn.davies.1 - 2012-06-04 22:15

Khoisan were here first....get over it,everyone else is colonialists, hahahahahahahahaha, black colonialists...go back to central Africa !

      franklyn.davies.1 - 2012-06-04 22:16

      irony is a bitch.

  • Smell - 2012-06-04 22:23

I think this is a great ad. It makes the people that like to propagate the self-serving model of 2 classes of South Africans uncomfortable: darker, first class citizens, even if they came from thousands of miles away. And lighter, second class citizens, even if some of them has been here for over 350 years. Kind of 1948 to 1994 in reverse. The ad clearly shows up the conceit that propagates the mentioned self-serving model. the truth remains, the Khoi San, a distinct looking people, with a distinct language and culture, was the very first people to populate the area at the Southern tip of Africa. If the original population should be regarded as the legitimate land-owners, the Khoi-San would be the people owning most of the Cape Province. Or can we hope for a country where every citizen has equal opportunity even if that never translates into equal outcome. BTW do not misunderstand me, I am for a reasonable degree of AA & BEE. I am just not sure why my people are generally made to feel like second class citizens, when we have a legitimate South African passport in our pockets.

      Emille - 2012-06-05 14:12

"The truth will set you free. But first it will piss you off."

  • Ian - 2012-06-05 08:54

If I'm mistaken the "xenophobic undertone" was here well before the advert, so don't blame Nandos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
