Sun City - Piet Nkambule has won the Shoprite Checkers boerewors competition.

The finals took place at the Valley of the Waves in Sun City on Saturday.

This was Piet's first time in the finals, but he has been participating in the competition for the last 19 years.

The Shoprite Newcastle meat market manager said it took him a while to perfect the right recipe, but even longer to convince the judges that his boerewors is the winner.

"My secret to the best boerewors lies in the special ratio of pork to beef meat I include in my mixture," Piet said.

Upon being pulsed by the media on what his secret recipe is, Piet just smiled mischievously and said: "I can never reveal that secret my friends."

Apart from winning a brand new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Rider, Piet also walked away with the much sought after 2012 Boerewors Champion crown.

Quinton Rossouw from Gauteng placed third and Mary Makhabela from Mpumalanga placed second.

Well if you work for checkers the last 19 years of your life, and you enter the Shoprite Checkers boerewors competition, pretty much the odds are in your favour!

  • stefan.vanderspuy - 2012-10-08 08:37

      Eduannn - 2012-10-08 09:04

      vambozha.mutemi.9 - 2012-10-08 12:17

I just want to know how fair it is by Shoprite to let its employees enter? Look at the past results and you will find that 9 out of 10 times the winner is a Shoprite Checkers employee, because they know what the judges are looking for and what Shoprite Checkers is looking for. Even the laaitie that won (was it) 2 years ago, had his dad, as the butchery manager at a Checkers, in his corner.

  • elizabeth.sambridge - 2012-10-08 09:37

I think Shoprite should hold their own competition for staff and that staff should not be allowed to enter the Real Boerewors Champion

  • steve.werner.334 - 2012-10-08 09:38

Maybe we should sing "Ngithanda Ibhunu wors" rather than that other song LOL

  • geraldsebanda - 2012-10-08 12:23

    move over Vuyo

  • tony.angel.3975 - 2012-10-08 14:07

    I can smell a "boerewors"!!

  • justin.sly.77 - 2012-10-08 15:26

Well done, nice prize, double cab and all! Well after 19 years of competition, it at least pays off for the man...

  • monalee.ottostadelmann - 2012-10-08 22:57

mmmh so he is a S/Rite Checkers employer ?? Not cool..

      ester.venter.3 - 2012-10-09 06:40

It actually doesn't say anywhere in the article that he is a Shoprite/checkers employee. Just because the marketing manager commented on his participation doesn't mean he works for them...

      ruanpretorius1980 - 2013-01-07 12:18

Kan jy lees Ester? Of is Ingels te moeilik vir jou? "The Shoprite Newcastle meat market manager said it took him a while to perfect the right recipe, but even longer to convince the judges that his boerewors is the winner."
