Soap star written out after suicide attempt

2012-07-07 10:02
Thinus Ferreira, Channel24
Parys – The actress Lindie Stander and her character of Nurse Elise in Binneland on kykNET (DStv 111) and M-Net analogue will be permanently written out of the weekday soap produced by Stark Films, after the actress made an apparent suicide attempt on her life and is currently under evaluation in the psychiatric unit of the Helen Joseph hospital, according to producers.

The producers revealed that Stander’s character will be written out of the show completely to be replaced by a new character and that 8 to 12 weeks' worth of script work rewriting will have to be redone in order to somehow write the actress out of the production over the coming weeks. Binneland is currently, co-incidentally, in recess from filming.

According to the producers the actress allegedly cut her one arm open to the bone and is currently in hospital and under evaluation. Members of the production team said they’re shocked and extremely saddened by the events which transpired and which is now impacting the production.

Within the South Africa's TV industry it has been known that the actress battled various things in her private life over a long period of time such as depression. Producers announced the developing news at a press screening in Parys, prefacing the announcement with the words that they "have some very sad news to share".

The cast of Binneland and kykNET channel head Karen Meiring were told about Stander’s situation on Friday.

Stander once before left Binneland before only to return again after a while, also due to problems of a personal nature. This time however the producers say the character will be written out permanently due to the difficult nature of the situation, that Stander has been informed of this decision, and that they have seen her since the incident happened earlier this week.

"Lindie is a beloved actress and the character of Nurse Elise has always been so popular with viewers, bringing a touch of lightness and humour to the show. In the light of what has happened and the personal situation of the actress we are saddened that unfortunately we have to let go of the character," the producers said. They added that "it will be very difficult to replace the character."

She needs understanding and should not be judged. Unless one has actually stood in those shoes and felt the depths of depression, one should not judge. To be in that dark place is a desperately dreadful experience. I wish her strength and fortitude and hope she has family or friends that will be there for her, no matter what.

  • shawnbrownphoto - 2012-07-07 10:39

Surely if she is already in a state to make an attempt on her life, writing her out of the script would be a further blow to deeper sadness in her life? typical western thinking: when there's a problem, get rid of it..

      mandy.robinson.5074 - 2012-07-07 10:52

Quite right! The writers and producers thought nothing of using her character in a life imitating art situation (she too was a victim of abuse at the hands of her stepfather), this all to increase ratings. I hope and pray she will receive the help and support she needs.

  • michelle.blackie - 2012-07-07 10:40

Depression is real and no one has the right to judge! She is suffering - help her, and do not add to the burden she is already carrying. Wishing you healing, Lindi

      100% correct Michelle

  • willie.viljoen.391 - 2012-07-07 10:44

Sorry that the Producers and KykNet is taking to stance towards Lindie - she has a problem and should be supported reather than to be rejected just like that - I feel sorry for her as she brought a lot of humor into many houses for the role she played in Binneland.

  • marthinus.olivier - 2012-07-07 11:13

I don't know why producers allow actesses to play abused and such emotional roles when it was so obvious that Lindie Stander was not "playing" Nurse Elise but re-living Lindie Stander being abused all over! I do not want to judge but the produsers should feel ashame! Lindie Stander God has never left you!

      karin.spilhaus - 2012-07-08 19:54

Agreed! How much louder must she shout for help??? Re-living this must have been horrible.

Calling for help is one thing BUT accepting it is another!Maybe she should first look at herself and whether its attention she wants or help!

      lara.vanrooyen.1 - 2012-07-07 11:53

Wow! Cutting yourself to the bone is just attention seeking? Is that what you do to get attention?

      Witchbladesa - 2012-07-09 10:05

Sorry Marthinus but here you are wrong. I deal with rape/abused victims on a regular basis and the one thing that they all do is ask for help by showing emotion and not words. Normally when people ask for help they are shot down and told to live with it, get over it, it is not that bad.... etc Very few people will say sit and tell me how I can help you. It normally takes something drastic before they actually get the help they need when they have asked for it so long ago already

That's right MNet/Kyknet, kick the woman while she's down instead of helping her. May the burden of depression come down on all of u so u KNOW what it's like to exist instead of live, to see a world that is black and grey instead of colourful. To just want to die because living is too painful.

  • ina.weilbach - 2012-07-07 11:44

Please, let us start a petition to get her back. This is our(the public`s) way to help her during this terrible time. She must get the help of specialists, but we can also help her, by wanting her back in Binneland - 2012-07-08 17:57

Dear Ina... I think it is a good idea to start the petition

  • corne.marx - 2012-07-07 12:46

  • ina.cripps - 2012-07-07 13:51

Usually an attempted suicide is a cry for help from a person who already has problems with self worth. I just hope the producers of the soapy will not be exacerbating whatever caused this poor girl to do what she did. But, as we don't know the story behind the story, who are we to judge? I wish her a very speedy return to good physical and mental health.

  • Francois Rademeyer - 2012-07-07 14:02

Soms maak die mensdom my so bitter siek! Kom by man, genade! Hoop julle kry skaam!

  • crazyjourno - 2012-07-07 15:32

Who says she suffers from depression? She can be bipolar for that matter... Nevermind the disease! People do not care, they only care about their own problems. You obviously have not experienced psychological difficulties! These type of difficulties is very different from ordinary problems, ie. money matters etc. It is a brain disease. Go and read, for reading is knowledge! If it was that easy (like in a choice) all psychologists, hospitals etc would be unempolyed and empty... Yes, it is hard on your family, but, her family should also be supporting her by what it is she is struggeling with. It is not a softie approach, you call it an understanding one! Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

      goldwright - 2012-07-08 09:29

Very true Clarissa, "depression" is often a blanket term, when people don't realise that there are other illnesses associated with it, like being bipolar, - it's not just "in the mind" and a matter of being strong enough to overcome it your self, or that other people have "worse problems" so "deal with it", if there are chemical imbalances in your brain, you need medical help and more often than not medication. Even people who suffer from properly diagonsed clinical depression, without being bipolar, schizophrenic, etc, often say they fall into a "deep pit" of despair where it seems like nothing will get them out of it. Easy for some to be judgemental though.......

      Bless Boswell - 2012-07-08 12:07

Mental health is misunderstood. It is not cool to suffer from depression. But, you know what? It does not matter what other people think. If they do not understand and they dont want to support you and stick by you, then move on and leave them behind.

  • JolenedeSousa - 2012-07-07 17:04

I am totally disgusted with the producers and MNET/Kyknet!!! You should be ashamed of yourself. Lindie has a serious condition for which she cannot help! You are adding to her condition instead of helping her in her time of need. Your writers are paid a salary to write, so let them do their job and change the storyline a little to exclude Lindie until she is well enough to come back to work. Lindie you are a very talented lady that clearly needs help - may the Lord help you deal with depression.

      merven.halo - 2012-07-09 07:32

And if she do it again in a month's time, and again later on? So every time the entire cast and shooting must be put on hold costing millions to the owners. The film industry is a business that must pay their bills and in SA the film industry is not a billion rand industry, it is a very financially tight business.

  • carole.yeadon - 2012-07-07 20:26

Very sad as she is one of the reasons I have been watching the show. On the whole Binneland is such an ""angry show. No-one laughs!!!! Eilise is the only one that brought some humour to the show. And Gustav with his bare chest???? What is her trying to prove or who is he tryong to impress. Come on SA, surely we have enough anger......make this a light hearted family show.

  • BullLionaires - 2012-07-07 23:12

Just because she slit her hand, she's out of a job. This is so insensible and very pathetic, producers never had a heart for anyone but themselves, pity you(sic)

  • Cindy Mendes - 2012-07-08 00:24

Ag no I love Elise I hope she feels better soon and get the much needed help she needs... We are all thinking of u... We will miss u;-(

  • patsy.smith.125 - 2012-07-08 11:49

So sorry, Lindie. I have been a depressive all of my life and it's a terrible thing to cope with. Especially with no help from medication. (Too expensive and certain Med Aids will not put it on chronic - SHAME ON THEM.) I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy - it's like a cancer of the psyche. Hang in there my girl.

  • esther.coetzee.50 - 2012-07-08 12:28

What Stark Films is planning to is going to worse the situation for Lindie. You are pulling an 'At Koster' on the poor girl. I will boikot the show in future

  • martin.pearce.3762 - 2012-07-08 13:13

Yeah, lets kick a woman when she's down, you SAD, SAD bastards,

  • deklerkies - 2012-07-08 13:27

      merven.halo - 2012-07-09 07:25

Ag please deklerkies, so were they supposed to show her away because of her 'abused' past? Then she would be suing them for discrimination. As a company owner it is illegal and against human rights to discriminate against someone's past medical history.

  • wilma.meyer - 2012-07-08 13:57

very sad....we will miss her character....she needs prayer and support and not treated like a leper

  • chantelle.rohl - 2012-07-08 17:55

This is like "kicking the dog when it's down". This a bad decision making by the producers of the show, they should rather show her more support than to give feedback of "cutting her out of the show"

  • marita.pienaar - 2012-07-08 21:38

SIES SIES SIES!!!!!!

  • rika.mullervanstaden - 2012-07-09 03:25

Lindie suffers from bipolar disorder and it is apparent that the producers lack knowledge and understanding of this disease!! Shame on them!! Now is the time for them to be there for her, encourage her and give her the sense of belonging.

  • odupreez - 2012-07-09 08:06

  • hamish.drake1 - 2012-07-09 08:27

A plea for help and you fire her. Well done Stark Fiklms and Mnet. Your loyality to your employees has been noted.

  • Witchbladesa - 2012-07-09 10:00

They put her in these depressing rolls, they make her a rape victim of family and then they say she suffers with depression. If they had known about her history of depression why the hell put her through such a story line. Typical now to blame the actress.

  • frikkie.marais.1 - 2012-07-09 11:36

Alweer Karin Meiring wat betrokke is by hierdie skandelike besluit!

  • DieticianSA - 2012-07-09 12:11

WHY write her out?! This woman grew up with more heartbreaking sadness & rejection in her life than anyone can handle.. Witnessed the suicide of her dad, being molested, etc.. MNet should rather make a plan, like giving her a less permanent role. Seems as if ALL the great actors just leave this soapie... & only the perfect & pretty ones remain. we want REAL people, REAL characters, with human flaws...

  • tshepos.setiso - 2012-07-09 12:25

suicide is not a solution for every one who have the same problem please try to relex and speak to the owner of life He will take out every problem than attempting suicide.

  • Lindie - 2012-07-09 12:43

  • wilma.meyer - 2012-07-09 13:37

Oh Lindie, I'm so sorry to hear of all your problems, and I think the writers of Binneland was very unsensitive to your ordeals. I want you to know, that YOU make Binneland, and after you've been written out, I doubt that I will still be watching Binneland as the stories are getting stupid and weak lately. When I hear and see "Gericke" I want to scream and even the plots are getting childish, I must say the cooking thing was funny and I am still rooting that you win it. We love you and will pray for you constantly.

  • lmmillinger - 2012-07-10 08:11

  • GodsGraceSuffices - 2012-07-10 08:49

It seems the production company is more worried about the costs that will affect their stupid filming than the actual human life who is desparately crying out for some help. This is the world we live in people. Where money and greed overtake the love and care and sympathy for human life. It is so sad, but Jesus said times would get like this and that things would become so bad that if He does not return, there would be no survivors!

  • mariana.theunissen - 2012-07-10 08:53

Seriously, and we as community just shuts the door when someone or friend or Colleague goes through lifes hard times - where is the support the understanding the friendship the humanity in this!!! Maybe it is time everyone starts standing together and pray for each other in stead of closing doors and everything else. Why do we allow ourselves to look the other way when someone is really in need ... this is not the way to lead SA...
