Maties choir on top of the world

Cape Town – Stellenbosch University Choir was ranked number one in the world on Wednesday by Interkultur, an organisation which facilitates international choir competitions and festivals.

The updated Top 1000 Rankings list by Interkultur also ranks the Stellenbosch University Choir as the No 1 choir in two other categories, namely Mixed Choirs and Sacred Music.

The University of Louisville Cardinal Singers from the USA placed second overall while the Guangdong Experimental Middle School Choir from China ranked third.

After participating in the category for Popular Music for the first time at the 2012 World Choir Games, the Stellenbosch University Choir was also ranked in the top ten in that specific category.

The conductor for the Stellenbosch University Choir is André van der Merwe.

The Stellenbosch University Choir is the oldest and most celebrated choir in South Africa and was founded in 1936 under the baton of William Morris.
