Vuyo Mbuli leaves a legacy, says SABC

2013-05-20 08:11
Johannesburg - SABC radio and television presenter Vuyo Mbuli has left a legacy for the country's youth, the public broadcaster's CEO Lulama Mokhobo said on Monday.

"He leaves a tremendous legacy and I think for the young people that have watched him and followed him..., this is a time for them to say 'I potentially could be the next Vuyo'..., somebody who is completely fearless," Mokhobo said in a Morning Live interview with Leanne Manas.

"He was somebody who was so dedicated and professional. It didn't matter what it was, if Vuyo had to do it, he did it with absolutely the best of his ability," Mokhobo said.

Memorial service

Manas broke down and cried on camera at the start of the programme on Monday.

The SABC reported that Mbuli, 46, collapsed while watching a rugby match between the Cheetahs and the Reds at the Free State Stadium on Saturday night.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to the Bloemfontein Mediclinic, where he later died.

Mokhobo said a memorial service would be held at the SABC on Wednesday, and that the Mbuli family had informed the broadcaster that his funeral would be held on Friday.

Details of the two events would be released later in the week.

  • Issa Kabudula - 2013-05-20 09:57

We can not speculate on stress, high blood pressure or anger on the sudden death of our "sharp sharp man" if time of our life comes to an end, we die any time and any place with or without sickness. To many his death is a lesson that we don't wait for sickness for us to die and its not accident to death - we got limited time to live and therefore we need to prepare for the death every time and every day. Vuyo Mbuli to me was a man of talent, active, go-getter and had respect of himself and other people, that I will miss him and his programme and therefore may the Almighty have mercy on him and forgive him. For his family cry less Mbuli was admired person for all who watched his shows and be patience it happens in life and it will keep on happening.

  • Lindiwe Nkumane - 2013-05-20 10:02

Vuyo will be remembered with his energetic personality, and his famous phrase "sharp-sharp heita"

  • Brian Connell - 2013-05-20 10:03

While I mourn the loss of a magnificently professional broadcaster who brought seriousness, humour and great commentary to us each and every morning, I am amazed at the outpouring of affection for this fine man. For once on this platform, black and white are united in their comments of grief and sympathy. What an outstanding legacy, Vuyo, to know that you were cherished and revered by all members of South African society. A great loss to South Africa. My condolences to the family and friends of this great character, and to Leanne who worked so well with him to bring some sunshine into our lives. Rest in peace, Vuyo, you were a MAN.

      Brian Connell - 2013-05-20 13:15

Thanks for the thumbs-down! Can I ask why whoever you are chose to do that? I see nothing untoward or contentious in my post. Or is it simply to be contentious yourself? A way to try an evoke some sort of angry response so typicl of a large number of people who contribute (and I use that word lightly) to these pages?

      Jo.Davies123 - 2013-05-20 14:44

I am also confused by this thumbs down, as I thought your words were lovely and a tribute to this wonderful man. I will say that there are people on Twitter who have upset me by some of their racist comments, saying that a white person has no right to mourn his loss. I for one do not choose who to befriend or admire by the colour of their skin and I held a great amount of respect for Vuyo. Perhaps it is one of these sad, racist individuals who is thumbs "downing"? Once again, your words were lovely

      Brian Connell - 2013-05-20 15:20

Thank you Jo. Yes, it's a sad reflection of our society, isn't it, when racism can rear its ugly little head in the most diverse circumstances. Circumstances where there should be NO divide whatsover. I stand by what I said about Vuyo. A great loss to South Africa. He was a fantastic personality, and is one whose colour meant absolutely nothing to his millions of viewers. I note with interest and sadness that the thumbs-down artist has chosen not to explain himself (or herself, of course).
