We are not racist, say models

2012-05-10 12:43

Johannesburg - Two young women who went to war with racist tweets last week were all innocence on Thursday.

"We don't have problems with each other, we don't have problems with any race," 22-year-old marketing student Tshidi Thamana said in Johannesburg after she met model Jessica Leandra dos Santos.

Democratic Alliance national spokesperson Mmusi Maimane arranged a meeting with the two women at his home in Roodepoort. The two shook hands and posed for pictures.

"We just happened to be individuals that got very upset and very carried away in a tweet on social media and I think we are owning up to it today," Thamana said.

'Didn't realise the impact'

Jessica, who started the spat with a racist tweet, said: "I didn't realise the impact my tweet would have had on the people [it] offended. We do aim to reconcile and get the nation back to where it was."

On 3 May, Dos Santos told her 2 591 followers: "Just, well took on an arrogant and disrespectful kaffir inside Spar. Should have punched him, should have [sic]."

She now has 7 263 followers.

Dos Santos, who was men's magazine FHM model of the year in 2011, has since deleted the controversial tweet and posted an apology on her blog jessicaleandra.com

In response to this on 7 May, Tshidi tweeted: "Dear Mr Peter Mokaba, I wish all whites had been killed when you sang 'Kill the Boer', then we wouldn't have to experience @JessicaLeandra's racism."

Maimane said: "Its been a journey for both Jess and for Tshidi ... I felt we needed to give each of these girls an opportunity to communicate to each other and certainly to communicate to you out there."

Maimane said he would write a letter to the Human Rights Commission containing evidence about the matter. Several people submitted complaints about the two women to the commission.

So she grew her following by 5000 ! what a reward!

      jomardl - 2012-05-10 12:59

Sadly, any publicity is good publicity.

      vlarismam - 2012-05-10 13:31

      that was probably the motivation!

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-05-10 17:38

Alicia - and the smile of the one on the right false and empty. Guess at least somebody is trying to repair the damage these airheads have done ...

      Thato - 2012-05-10 19:20

yeh! Guess girl on the right also does not buy the fake smile and cold hand shake of girl on left- *who's fooling who*

      thabo.manganye - 2012-05-17 15:12

ja but she lost her sponsers, think i would prefer the sponsers than having so many people following me on twitter.

  • jomardl - 2012-05-10 12:56

Yes you are, you vacuous bimbos. You are both nasty.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 13:57

And you just a shining example of perfect?

      jomardl - 2012-05-10 14:45

Oh that's right, I forgot, only shining examples of perfection are allowed opinions.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 15:31

"Before you judge me, make sure YOU'RE perfect."

      jomardl - 2012-05-10 16:07

I don't need to be perfect to know that's one of the dumber things I have ever heard.

      Atholl - 2012-05-10 19:15

The Second Take is usually better than the first : ---- Take 1 --- Jessica's rights to [[ dignity ]] (being insulted whilst shopping) and [[ security ]] verbal abuse that she interprets as the male 'typo' who threatens herself and other girls who have to defend their security (rape). --- Take 2 ---- Jessica responds by surrendering her [[ privacy ]] rights only to become the 'offender' by threatening persons of another [ race ] group. --- Take 3 --- Tshidi now feels that her rights are infringed so she also 'bites back' not knowing that she is also threatening others by [ race ] and includes a further threat to their right to [ life ] --- So the girls now realize their wrong and opt for the == Second Take == Take 4 == Both girls meet to discuss the issues -- -- Have they realised that Both have one thing in common --> The [Dignity] and [Security] of BOTH girls and All others their age has still not been resolved !! So what's the score ? 1-0 ? 0-0 ? 2-0 ? Well Both girls -- and all the others their age -- have Passed! The girls are a product of a nasty environment called society that does not provide a [[ model ]] on how to respond to the real threat. Society, that does not have a [ model ] has failed.

  • Itumeleng - 2012-05-10 12:58

This has gone too far, News24 readers, if this is not a wake up call for all to start treating each other with respect, irrespective of our backrounds or skin colours, then we'll continue to be labelled a racist nation. We can change for the better, it's possible.

      Pietie - 2012-05-10 14:02

@Piet Wat se jy Piet? What did you say Piet?

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-05-10 17:41

I think we'll always be a bit racist, it's a matter of not allowing our racism to cloud our judgement. I think denying we prefer those most similar to ourselves is one of our problems, but hating one another is just destructive.

  • mthabine.justice - 2012-05-10 12:59

what a way of trying to be famous!

  • Peter - 2012-05-10 13:00

Enough about the cover ups, just dust yourselves and get back to life. If you not racists, then what makes a racist?

  • ross.v.leeve - 2012-05-10 13:08

...some folks will do or say anything in their pursuit for fame, as is the case of these two models. Its sad and disgusting. R.

  • ngonimclean - 2012-05-10 13:09

Another useless article nd we still click the comments section. News24 is\r\n havin a field day with these race articles

  • magomarele - 2012-05-10 13:11

acquiring fame at the expence of human race.

  • Matt - 2012-05-10 13:14

Pair of stupid vacuous cows. Combined IQ of 23. Models should NEVER speak, actually they are perfect candidates for compulsary lobotomy. (It will be easy though, they are born half-lobotomised anyway) Stand there and look nice. Have no opinions on anything, let alone world peace, working for change, or just generally using their fame(?) as a platform for any kind of liberal cause-du-jour, because that is what the stupid public expects from these glorified mannequins.

  • marie.vyver - 2012-05-10 13:17

Models are two for a penny. The industry can do without these two dimwits.

  • bill.vanzyl - 2012-05-10 13:23

Never understand how airheads become celebrities - they do nothing more than flash a bit of flesh for the cameras and suddenly they are qualified to pronounce on everything from the cost of petrol to world peace with the economy and health care in between. Oh wait, this is South Africa, continuity announcers on TV are considered celebrities!

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-05-10 17:43

To be fair bill, it's not just in South Africa, it's worldwide.

      Gieljam - 2012-05-10 17:56

Billy stop being cross with yourself get some vooma to face the kids

  • Zimbobwe - 2012-05-10 13:23

Now buzz off your five minutes of fame is over.@Thamane do you really call yourself a model??? With a body and face like that my wife can do much better. And wena Maimane which one did you do first??? You are also looking for attention!!!

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-05-10 17:44

I hope your wife does not read the News24 comments section.

  • veldt66 - 2012-05-10 13:26

Is this what South Africa has to offer interms of MODELS? Idiots doing it for the cameras. I dont understand why the two hve to meet as far asi know the two were not fighting each other, but rather promoting their racist views from opposite angles. The only solution for these idiots is to sleep with man from opposite race to prove they at not racist. News24 you should stop giving this story prime coverage, it seems to me you ar chasing ratings with this divisive thrash.

  • roberta.keeling - 2012-05-10 13:28

Aaaaah - how sweeeeeet!! You would almost believe them. Grow up kids and start acting like adults. The look on Tshidi's face says it all, and Jessica looks like a real blonde!

      Jean - 2012-05-10 14:29

So admitting their mistakes, apologizing and doing something about it is not the adult thing to do?! Quite childish that people like you is so hung up about something they both regret.

  • Thozi - 2012-05-10 13:29

I believe the reason to apologise is that one has realised one's wrongs and wants to change for the better. We've all done and said wrong and hurtful things to own families, friends, colleagues etc. - and had asked for and got forgivenss. Some had even forgiven us before we asked for it, for they'd realise how naive we were at a certain time. Are the two ladies any different from ordinary human beings?

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 14:03

No, spot on with that remark. People here are pathetically trying to take the moral high ground. Very pretentious of them..

  • luanne.beaumont1 - 2012-05-10 13:33

This is why this country is a mess , political platforms are used for the smallest incident and no one benefits from it , the government is still corrupt and the poor people, will stay poor, imagine if their situation was highlighted like this incident was highlighted ?

      Piet - 2012-05-10 13:35

Well you get what you vote for at the end of the day....

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 14:02

Well at least the DA are trying to do something, the ANC were completely silent on the matter. Condoning racism?

  • Gerhard - 2012-05-10 13:38

Jessica, Honey, lets face it: Nothing you do or say now can repair the damage. Whatever lead to you acting the way you did, has no bearing on the situation. The only way for you to survive now, is to take your career overseas. Nobody in their right minds would hire you or have their products linked to you. Tata Love!

      Katlego - 2012-05-10 17:58

Spot on Gerhard, unfortunately for her she will always be known as the Stupid Racist Model... She must just Lye Low for two to three years get a rich husband and make babies, as for her so called career "oe nwele" She drank it #direct transaltion meaning shes messed it up..

  • CydonianKnight - 2012-05-10 13:38

This is laughable! As punishment I would've had them french kiss.

  • Dennis - 2012-05-10 13:43

You are both butt ugly racist tarts finnish and klaar !!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 14:00

If she walks in my room in her birthday suit and when I ask her\what's my name\, she can call me the K word twenty thousand time I do not care.

  • stan.cloete1 - 2012-05-10 13:47

The fact is, racism hasn't stopped since 1994. These matters just get swept away and everybody has to act like nothing happened

  • rlong1952 - 2012-05-10 13:54

Eish this has been blown out of all proportion. Just two people blowing off some steam, what they did was not right, but hey, you who are without sin, cast the first stone.

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 13:58

I see the stone throwers who live in glass houses, AKA News24 commenters, are out in full force again..

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-05-10 18:13

      That would include you then?

  • mark.felmore - 2012-05-10 13:59

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 13:59

Right, that's done and dusted, now everyone just move on...

  • justmaimane - 2012-05-10 14:04

it is like saying that im not a rapist even though i am found guilty of raping... not a thief but caught right handed stealing.... Just apologise and shut your lips.

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-05-12 02:22

      NOT the same.

  • Paul - 2012-05-10 14:26

she should be forgiven, after all, isnt that whats South Africa is all about. All u commentators, who of you has never done something wrong before>. Get off your high horses. Simunye we are ONE!

  • Dave - 2012-05-10 14:26

Both these young women have exposed themselves for what they really are. Let them disappear from public view and consciousness forever. Two more deserving people can easily be found to fill their pretty new shoes. Modelling simply requires above average looks and implied charm.Good luck finding real jobs, you two hateful, vacuous bimbos.

  • Wayne - 2012-05-10 14:27

Silly comments by 2 immature girls. Well done to Maimane though

  • Skwertno1 - 2012-05-10 14:28

Never mind them, congrats to Democratic Alliance national spokesperson Mmusi Maimane for arranging the meet

  • Melissa - 2012-05-10 14:34

Tshidi Thamana doesn't realy look too eager to make peace if you ask me. If you use the "k" word, you are a racist. Finish and klaar. Regardless of the behaviour of ANY person, it gives no one the right to call someone the "k" word. But then again, you can't buy class. You are born with it.

  • Rishaal - 2012-05-10 14:42

They are trying to save there careers.Would the DA have done the same if they were not somewhat famous?Try as we may but only time and education can rid us of racism.

  • Johann Bester - 2012-05-10 14:51

Tshidi dose not looks pissed off lol

  • Stefan - 2012-05-10 15:20

Absolutely pathetic and a waste of good news space!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 15:32

      Really?? On News24?? HAHAHAHA!!

  • Jayjay - 2012-05-10 15:50

Come now silly people...of course they are not racist... racism is a mental state implying you would need a brain...these are models, see there's no brain..

  • Brendon - 2012-05-10 16:24

I am a circumstantial rascist....Taxi driver cuts me off.....Boertjie steals my droewors.....Pomms beat us as cricket...all cirumstantial rascism.

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-05-12 02:26

Perfect. My partner is a circumstantial sexist when it comes to women drivers - I love it when he thinks it's a woman driver and it turns out to be a boerewors stuck to his cellphone. There isn't a person here that they have never been racist, sexist, ageist, or unkind. Let's admit that we all have moments of rage where manners fly out the window. To the rest: you are saints, and we envy your self-control.

  • George - 2012-05-10 16:27

Anyone noticed how gatvol Tshidi looks? Thats not remorse.... They're both pathetic. Losers.

  • Chumscrubber1 - 2012-05-10 17:37

All I can say is false, and shallow. Look at those vacant smiles - thees gurls aar nort veri brite spaaks ... damage is done, klaar.

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-05-10 17:46

Now why did yours publissh this coment twyce?

  • Katlego - 2012-05-10 18:03

Lets all be honest the Jessica Chick Is racist and has been probably all her life, in this case she forgot to mind herself in Public and Now she has been exposed "not that we care if she is or not". The Tshidi Chick is also racist and saw the perfect opportunity with the mess that Jessica created to also voice her deep dark secret,,, I wanna Kill my Boss almost every day and not because she is white but cos she is a Witch.. And yes i have Called her a Stupid White B**** when im angry..Does that now make meracist?

  • Chantal - 2012-05-10 18:40

Models and beauty queens should be restricted to uttering only two words - "WORLD PEACE"!

  • Claude - 2012-05-10 19:32

Dumb blond shoulda kept her comments to herself, but I guess she was trying to impress her 2 591 followers... what a joke.

  • Ruan - 2012-05-10 23:11

    ...maimane looks like a bollux....

  • Baas - 2012-05-11 05:19

What happened to the bastard that was disrespectful to Jessica ?

      Gieljam - 2012-05-11 07:54

Baas agree sorry you posted your comment late..

  • Vincent - 2012-05-11 07:31

Look where your popularity stunt got you...dining together! Ain't that good for you idiots?!

  • antonette.antzzn - 2012-05-11 10:27

Of course Jessica's smile looks genuine, she smiles for a living. Not much effot needed there since modelling doesn't really require much brain work. But other than that, good on them. Sad that it takes a public shaming to realise and admit what you've done wrong and justifying it by saying it was the first time that you did it and that you didn't realis ethat it would offend people! seriously, you thought calling some1 the K word wouldn't offend them??! And then Tshidi on the other hand going and stooping to her level, not smart at all! This country is in deep trouble.

  • Carry - 2012-05-11 12:19

  • Rosalind - 2012-05-11 17:53

Sad...very sad. No matter how you look at it this is just indicative of the state of the nation and the danger of social media, neither of which is going to change overnight!

  • thabo.manganye - 2012-05-17 15:10

another one bite he dust....... wish you both good luck with your p.r work.. so much of a Rainbow nation.

  • popeye.sailor.1884 - 2012-11-02 21:48
